    Hey folks,

New member here from Iowa. I am 51 y/o that has been on kidney dialysis for 10 years. Prior to my kidney failing I worked for BNSF railway for 16 years as an engineer and before that I was in the Army for 6 years. I have been starting to make inquiries to a few carriers as to their requirements to be hired. All have wanted at least 18 months of some type of full time employment. So I was wondering if you know of any carriers that might either don't have employment requirements or that will waive mine since I am disabled till I get a new kidney? Any advice will be welcomed greatly!

Most every company requires a work history.

Your in farm country. I assume you have a CDL? Most railroad guys I know have one because the company pays extra for it. Farmers will be needing drivers for Harvest season in the spring, they start somewhere down in Texas and harvest all the way up the middle to Canada. I have never done it but several members here got there start that way. I have seen there ads for years willing to train drivers in February and early march so they will have there CDL by spring.

You don't necessarily have to show continous employment for the last 10 years. You do have to be able to document what you were doing during that period. When I started years ago I hadn't worked at all for 3 years but had phone numbers the companies could call to verify what I was doing and that all that was required.

Might be some confusion here. I do not have a CDL yet. My plan is to go to DMACC (Des Moines Area Community College) and do their CDL School. I was an engineer for BNSF Railroad..no idea why I would get a CDL for that..we had our own type of license requirement for that.

Sounds like Schneider might hire me after I get my transplant and CDL..as long as I pass the CDL physical. Talked to their recruiter and as long as I had a valid reason she saw no problem for me. Also Swift and CRST recruiters said I would be able to hire with them as well...tho I really don't want to with either of them.

I like the farmer angle if I can not get with a carrier right away. Might be worth a shot :)

I have seen many harvest truck driver jobs posted where they will train you to get your CDL using there equipment.. Some farmers and crews are already looking. You have to sell your self and be willing to work.

Schneider is ok. There's plenty others to choose from after you get the cdl. Here's a couple that hire new cdl grads.
Don Hummer Trucking is headquartered in Iowa.
Schuster is headquartered in Iowa. Their big account is Blue Bunny Ice Cream.

The down side I see is that you worked for the BNSF as a hog head. Everyone knows that the really good guys are car toads.

Plus you were Army, again, the real fighters are Air Force.

As to employment history, an employer has to make three attempts to verify your employment. They do not judge your history, they only have to fill in a box. I had to verify my own employment, only 1 of my past employers returned the inquiry.

Good luck with your health issues.
