i am talking about strictly flatbeds that are empty, nothing on there boards, every single time got the red light to pull up to the right, to the front of the building, right in front of the window, sit there a few sec, then get the green light to continue on down the high way.

and Dance, dont you have pre-pass in your truck?? i do, i thought VA had the pre-pass.

Could the weigh stations be checking for any bracing and/or other such equipment that isn't secure?
I've seen flatbeds with 4x4's in the empty spare tire carrier, bouncing around -- and out onto the highway.
I've also seen spare tires strapped to the floor and the straps were loose. A few years ago, one such spare tire came loose and off the flat bed, --- and through the windshield of a 4-wheeler, killing the driver. The Big truck truck driver was never found.

Perhaps they're just trying to prevent that from happening?

All my equipment is stowed and secured and not on the deck.

How do they know that until they take a look-see?
Have you ever been hassled beyond pulling around back?
If not, it could be because your equipment is properly secured
    and/or stored.

On a lighter note --- I was sitting at a weigh station and saw a flatbed instructed to pull 'er 'round back, and the scalemaster came out to check the load on the trailer. The load consisted of one Tonka Toy truck. The driver had his young son with him and was teaching him to inspect the load.

I didn't catch the whole conversation, but when it ended they were all laughin'.

Here are some off the wall ideals

Perhaps they have information on drugs, or terrorist activity?

Maybe they are looking to get a average on M/T flatbeds in order to determine a increased weight limit? They have been talking about allowing trucks haul more weight. (although you would think they already would have this information)

They are just pulling in all flatbeds loaded or not because they have been busting a lot trying to carry more weight here lately?????

Again these are just off the wall ideals..

If I have to choose..I have to go with AfterShock.

Many a flatbed has passed me with stuff hanging out from every available space...not secure.

heck, maybe aftershock is right, tho what about the right side of the truck... ehh... i guess cameras on the right side to look whats going on down that side,
i like the ideas that are being typed away here tho, some of them, even the 'off the wall ideas' all seem pretty logical

Prepass has no way to tell the status of the truck's load other then weight. It would be almost impossible for the weigh stations to go through & decide which companies are flatbed, drybox, reefer, etc. & then set to AVI prepass to pull in only those light trucks.

I used to see two or three of the unmarked black pickups every trip through with reefers. Lately I have not even seen an unmarked pickup anywhere (knock on wood).
