I'm a beginning Driver - with that said - I'm trying to get my rig setup:
I'm looking at an RCI-2950 (Mod) with a Wilson 5000. I can get the equipment pretty cheap, based on the equip I planning on running.
Here's my ? - I know the RCI is a 10 Meter Modified - will I get fined for having it? It will be in plain site.
Why do I want the RCI, - I was into the communications world via CB's in the mid 90's and this was the Best-of-the-Best available and according to what I've read online - it's still the best-of-the-best for both commo and SSB.
Do you recommend a better setup for OTR - one of which I don't have to worry about if I get pulled over? Is the RCI the way to go - is there any distortion in the RX?
Please provide me with as much information as possible - and your opinions will be received whole-heartedly!!!!!!
Warm Regards,
John
"Bone-Head" or "Darts" (just not sure of the handle - I was known back in the early to late 90's as Bonehead, but Dart's is my Passion!!!!!!)

From what I understand, most trucking companies and the border patrol will take that radio from you in a heart-beat and fine you on top of it. That's why you don't see truckers using 10-meter radios in their work rig.
-
a little overkill for the truck...

What r u talking about? No 1 will take a 10 meter radio from anybody. 10 meters radios r legal. Now if they catch u using this radio for things that require licenses that is a whole different story, but just for having it in the rig and using it legaly they will not take it away.
BTW Driver that is a sweet setup. Make sure u get good ground for your antenna and don't fry it with too much power
Good luck -
I dont want to sound like someone else we know but, 10 meter radios are not legal. These are export radios and have to have modifications done to them for them to work on the c.b. channels. Now with that said, I ran export radios for years and never had any problems as long as you stay on the 40 channels allocated to c.b. The problem occurs when you start getting into the 10 meter ham freq. thats when the hams start getting upset.
The 2950 is a good radio and so is the Wilson ant. ,should be a pretty good setup.Good luck and stay safe -
Mustang my point exactly. For example you can get galaxy 99 and be 100% legal. The moment you modify it to be used as 10 meter without a license, you are breaking the law. Otherwise u r ok.

Get passed the Blah Blah on the legal issues here...
One... You do not need a 5000 A Wilson 2000 will do the exact same job.. save a few bucks there..
What is the difference between the two? The Wilson 2000 is good up to a 1000 watts and the 5000 is good up to 2500 (maybe a little less)
I am not a ranger fan... in the old days they was a great radio but I just don't think they compare to some of the new radios out today. -
Yeap a 2000 will handle that Ranger no problem and you will see no perfromance difference between the two.
The 10 meter radio is illegal and only the FCC can take it from you unless the FCC has instructed other law enforcment to do it for them.
Yes you can also be fined, up to $10,000.00 for operating a 10 meter radio on the 11 meter band. I would not worry about it too much if you stay on the regular 40 and not bug people with it. -
But the point is moot if you are going to use the radio on 11 Meters. Valczer is exactly right. It is against the law to use it 1) on CB, or 2) on the non-existent "channels" outside CB, and 3) ON the actual 10 meter band without the required license. Some people HAVE been fined the $10,000 such as a Mr. Ross in Florida. The fines just went UP last summer to $18,000. A few drivers have had their "export" radios confiscated when they crossed the borders by DOT agents.
Why not buy a Galaxy 959 and be done with it? That is a LEGAL, FCC-certified CB radio that causes no worries (unless you modify it).
Gadflyvalczer Thanks this. -
Thanks for the advise!!! The only reason I want a 2950 is simply because back in my day's of running a radio the 2950 was the "Stuff (lack of a better word)"
I would only use it for the 40 channels and also to talk Skip. I loved talking skip when I had a footwarmer on my base (which has since been long gone.)
I'll look into the Galaxy 959. I like the idea of saving some dough from the Wilson 5000 to the 2000. I'll pickup a 2000.
By the way - can anyone tell me of a shop in and around the Denver Metro area where I can check out the units? I really don't want to have to buy online, but I will if it's my only option. I know that when I'm OTR I will find plenty of shops.
Thanks again for all of your information!!!!!!!!!!!!!
