How does one get into hauling things like these?

Don't bet on it.

 

This is the kind of stuff they yank through Fort Mac on a regular basis. This one is larger than the typical oversize modules we normally see but they bring probably 3 or 4 major oversize modules through here a week. When I get tired of wrenching and decide to utilize my class 1, this is where I want to be. No point in doing it if you can't be the big dog, right?

 

What were those things?

 

I believe its called a Sulphur Recovery Unit for one of the oilsand mines. Cost of labour here is so huge that its apparently cheaper to build these mods in the Edmonton area and truck them up here when they're completed. Fort Mac's main route has been designed with OD loads in mind. All overpasses have a high load bypass ramp, all traffic lights and overhead signs can swing out of the way and if there are any overhead power lines, they are like 40+ feet above the road.

 

Is that video sped up? If not, they are going way faster than I care to pull a Goldhofer with a load like that. They tend to go wheels up if you don't keep them level.

 

A friend of mine works for them (crane operator)He makes good money but is almost never home. Mostly oilfield/refinery and windmill work.

 

I would say so. They normally seem to go about 25km/h

 

Even if they do it every day the answer is the same. The fact they do it every day would just accelerate the progression of his chances.

 

Seek out heavy haul companies, talk with the driver's. Get your feet wet in flatbed

It's all up to what you want to do. Make short term goals, work to a long term destination.

We can laugh and joke all we want but, if a company said "We want you to drive this for just one day" I don't believe any of us would turn down the opportunity. The first day you pull a flatbed you think "This is the greatest day ever". Then the first time you pull an oversize you think "This is the greatest day ever". I don't know how it affects other people but I almost get a high feeling pulling big loads. Along with that comes the high stress of making sure the t's are crossed and the i's are dotted. To me hauling bigger loads isn't as much physically draining as it is mentally.
