I did have a sincere chat with a landstar o/o (a few months there only) at the shipper where we picked up the same load going to the same warehouse scheduled for two different appointments. Mine was paying $200 more !? I booked mine from the Landstar Ranger agent, but there are different kinds of Landstars (subsidiaries?). He said he was using their own loadboard. I said to him that after I set up with LS I had access to their loadboard too, but was not sure if that's the same as his as I am an external carrier, besides I never go and look there anyways. Logically (ethically, if anyone cares), I should've been paid less than him, as he is afiliated, so they should take care of him more rather than me, but perhaps they were very eager to cover the load at the last minute. But it did not feel like a well paying load anyways. Are the landstar loadboard (s) the same for independent carriers as for their own owner ops? If so, what are the pros to be leased on to LS? Insurance, Plates, Fuel discount (which they offered to me too), tollways, subscription to Elogs? Do you have to rely on the Loadboards or the agents are like the brokers who you call directly after a while?

This begs the age old question? Why do drivers talk about what their loads pay at all? I know what I will run for. Don't give a rats ### what other guys get or 'say' they are getting. if someone asks me they won't get any correct answer. I keep my business to myself and there would be so much less drama in this industry if everyone else did the same.

I don't care what someone else has either, nor did I ask him about his rate. He was just confining and expressing his disappointment with all the issues in general, giving this rate as an example. On the other hand, I hear all that talk, fingers pointed and names calling about suckers pulling loads for pennies, spoiling rates, so it is good to know what others make on given lanes to have a better clue what to agree on a load. It is good to know for someone that he's not the sucker. I just felt sorry for the guy as he seemed distressed. I don't care about dramas other then dramas in the "Better Call Saul" drama series. Maybe if five thousands like him will undercut you like that you will become dramatic too.Loke, Lepton1 and Socal Xpress Thank this.

I brought this up in a different post. Not sure why,.. but almost any conversation with a Landstar O/O the topic of rate almost always comes up.
What confuses me is that people here on TTR that obviously know more about Landstar than I do,.. tell me that they are compensated better than what the guys I talk to tell me in person. So who to believe? Its not like I am going to put my truck on with LS just to find out.

That's because in any given group Landstar leased operators, and everyone else - you have a very select few who know wtf they are doing. And the rest who don't and piss/moan about everything. The latter are more prevalent than the former and that's why you always meet them more often than not.

My understanding is when leased to Landstar they do most of or all of the back office stuff for their BCO's this is one reason why you might be able to get a better rate.

The question is. When considering all the extra expenses you have versus what that Landstar BCO has did you really make that much more than him even though your rate was $200 more than his? Of course this was only one load so not even close to any sort of big picture but you get the idea. It's such an apples and oranges comparison with no clear cut answers and lots of variables. Kind of like when guys come on here and ask should they lease to Landstar or Mercer. I mean there really is no answer for a question like that.
