How strict are the DOT with this regulation, I am about to buy a Trailer that has a 45 foot distance from kingpin to center of rear axle group. Most Eastern states have a maximum distance of 41 foot.
Why would Fontaine (or any other manufacturer) make a trailer thats illegal in almost half the states in the Country.
    Thank you

What is the overall length of the trailer? If it's 48 feet or less, it's legal in all states.

Kingpin to axle would not apply.

They'll build you anything you are willing to pay for, as long as it meets the regulations they are bound by. Size restrictions vary enough, and they don't know where you'll be using it. Heck, 14' tall trailers are legal in some places, as are 59' trailers. There are also places where the common 53'x102" trailer is illegal. It is up to the operator to know the law where they operate and spec their purchase accordingly.

They are made to be able to slide to the rear for loading heavy items such as a 7000 lb roll of paper plus the forklift weight.
Also for when you are in a downhill ramp to the dock. Sliding the tandems to the rear raises the trailer to dock height.

Also takes tail swing away when in tight docks/drop lots.

It is the drivers responsibility to know the laws and slide them back up for the road.

In his other post about this he says the trailer has a well so Im guessing its a fixed tandem double drop flatbed.

I don't think he's buying a van, and I'm pretty sure the axles won't be able to be slid.

Yes, i didn't specify trailer type. It is a 2016 Fontaine renegade RGN with 29 foot in the well, Im just wondering how someone can avail of a 29 foot well and do most of their work in the east side of the country where the law is max 41 feet from kingpin to center of rear axle group.
