If you are in the black, you are doing well.

I do fine for myself. I also own a lawn care service so that helps. I have some employees. Helps the lawn care when we are out of season

The sky is the limit if you play your cards right and you buy the proper trailer which probably would cost more than your truck itself

I know a guy in Florida that only worked 6 months out of the year without a trailer pulling someone else's trailers empty most of the time and he still cleared over $100,000 last year even after putting $50,000 worth of repairs into his truck

IF you're going to work for some crappy paying mega carrier who only pays $1.00 mile, not much. If you think like a true O/O and look for high paying freight with low miles, you can make a decent living. It also depends on what type if freight you're going to haul.
It's about the maximum gross rate worth the lowest miles possible and staying out of dead areas unless you're getting paid to leave MT.

$96,000 to run from Galveston Texas to Bridgeport West Virginia hauling an oversize load only driving during Bankers hours Would be MY kind of freight.
Unfortunately it requires specialized equipment and not too many people get to do that sort of thing.

Its not that it can't be done but you have to be a driver, a Mechanic, a Book keeper, Dispatcher, etc.

If you can do all that go right on ahead. Also we found that driving a truck that is paid off is way more cheaper on insurance and if you look good even repairs. I bought a truck for 10k. Paid cash. Stuck little money into it for tires, brakes etc. shes on the road making money everyday. Shes paid that 10k and even got a nest egg for if motor pukes or whatever. No shes not a shiney W900L like i want but shes making money.

Find a Local mechanic for half of dealer rates. Find a factory to haul straight from to elimanate Brokers.

There are ways to make it. Don't listen to all the negative Nancy saying it can't be done because it can. Gonna be tough times and good times. You just have to be strong willed and plan for the bad times. Good Luck to you.
