I am in IL too and paid for mine close to $2000 in 2016. The miles for the IRPA period (2015/2016) were around 135K miles (mostly states between IL and CAL). The good thing about IL is that trucks/trailers for commercial use are sales tax exempt , a few grand saved there and trailer registration is cheap and one time fee only. Though living in Cook county they screw you dearly on property taxes so the equilibrium remains the same.

@TallJoe I was running Intermodel only in IL for a little bit and I was told that after a full year of miles to report, i would be between $2,800 and $3,500. At that point a base plate might of been cheaper. I still run 80% of my miles in IL, but I have an OH plate and I was told it would be a lot cheaper still since i'm not based in IL.

If your getting you own authority, your insurance will be minimum of $10,000 no matter what. It'll take 2-3 years of clean driving to get it down to under $7000.00. I have 2 trucks and 7 trailers insured and it's a shade over $10,000. When I got my authority my insurance was under $6000 in 2007. Insurance has changed the way the do new registrants. If your from Illinois, check with mike at Clemens & associates in Bloomington IL. Great agent.

I think I will have to go with a company for a few months or so to get recent experience unless I can find someone who will let me roll on 5 month old cdl a holder and my past experience longer than ten years ago
