Let me pose this as an example:
I have been asked to drive 150odd miles with an estimated +/- 2.5 hours driving time. Since I am unladen (driving with an empty trailer, but the same issue is posed when driving bobtail), I am being asked to complete this drive "off duty", but I am a company driver, not an owner (lease) operator.
Is this legitimate, if so, how do I note it on my logs (paper equivalent, since I use the "keeptruckin.com" app? When ELDs are implemented, how would this situation be handled?
Hours question... is this legitimate?

If you have 2.5 hrs driving time remaining you should be able to log that easy. Of course that depends on what state you are driving in and their truck speed limit. If it is 60 mph or higher you are good to go. OFF DUTY, NO NO NO.

That's what I thought, but my dispatcher seems to think otherwise.... there was no scale house between the 2 points.
It's not so much that I didn't have the time, but I needed to drive to pick up a loaded trailer from my HOME(as I had just completed a 34) at my company's yard about 150 miles away as follows.
Depart home at 1930 local time.
Arrive at company yard at 2230 local time.
Deliver first drop at 0645 local time ( slightly more than 2 hours drive away, so I would need to continue by 0330 to arrive between 0530 and 0600)
Would this create a conflict with the 11 / 14 hour clock that would have started ticking at 1930?Last edited: Feb 9, 2017

Once your 11/14/70 is burnt, you cannot drive anymore. You cannot drive off duty moving a trailer.
I dont really follow your second post. If you started your clock at 1930, your 14 is burnt at 0930.Commuter69 Thanks this. -
He can't drive off duty trailer or no trailer. This not a personal conveyance situation.
otherhalftw, RedRover, tscottme and 4 others Thank this. -
Sometimes my math doesn't work.... I hate math, I hate it, I hate it, I hate it....
Did I say I hate it? Lol -
Even if your company allows line 5 driving which they seem to, driving toward a load isn't a line 5 situation. That's all drive time there. Tell your dispatch that you're gonna call state dot and run it by them just to be sure and see what happens
AM14, otherhalftw, RedRover and 1 other person Thank this. -
when your company "asks" you to do something, it's not personal conveyance.......simply put.
ChicagoJohn, AM14, otherhalftw and 8 others Thank this. -
As others have said, this isn't personal conveyance. Part of the rule is that you are not under dispatch during the usage of the truck while a personal conveyance. Basically, it's meant for you to bobtail from home to the terminal to start your day, or from the terminal to home to end it, or similar circumstances. Honestly, the rule isn't very clear beyond that so it's mostly up to whoever is doing the enforcing/auditing I guess.

If you go there empty, you have to return empty. Otherwise it is work, work is logged.
