corrected question:
Question to owner operators - are you using any platforms or software that collect real time data from diagnostic port( OBDII / J1939 / etc.) to optimize your fuel consumption or/and preventive maintenance? Which one you are using? what you like / don't like / why decided not to use?

Control?
NO
Tracking?
Yes.
it isn't obd but can interface.
Why do you ask? -
NO, I still use the old fashion method of calculator and data. I've found that using older technology and (some) equipment has certain benefits that serve me well in my type of hauling. I love technology for weather, finding loads, emailing family, etc; but since GPS trackers can't always be 100% accurate, I find that writing down mileage and cities on a .99 cent pad of paper and a 3.00 dollar calculator are really all I need.
I save $ by running my generator at night, driving slow (62 to 67), keeping my tire pressure levels up, keeping up on grease jobs, cooking in the truck, eating fresh fruits and veggies, showering in the truck, having very low stress levels associated with life, which keeps my blood pressure down.
Put all these things together and you have a successful, happy, rewarding and long career trucking. If I died tomorrow, I'd have zero regrets. -
Ridgeline - just curious why almost no owner operators are using it. Control is probably wrong word, just changed in original question from "control" to "optimize". I know that a bunch of fleet managers use is as Big Brother, but there are lots of benefits other than that - especially with preventive / predictive maintenance.
Robert - that looks like a good recipe for happiness lol Did you try using any of those devices? Why did you decide not to use it, just did not see enough value? -
Because the interface is costly for people who can't make their own, and the accuracy is questionable with the software packages out there.
Most fleet managers in companies can use the elog unit to track a lot of stuff, others use some other systems.
I won't get into details but my management system, but it works well enough that it is integrated into our entire system. We capture data from the trucks which is used for PPM and our other needs. -
OBD2 is not a platform used by commercial vehicles, the government mandated obd2 for cars and light trucks. Manufactures of commercial products all have different platforms and require proprietary software to diagnose
-
The platforms are all fixed under the two or three standards used for communications on the trucks. The most obvious is the SAE J1939 standard so outside of the specific ECM commands to return data, pretty much all the same. If they were not, then Elogs would not work. So it depends on what you are looking for, you can query messages about fault codes with simple CL statements in a terminal. The deep ECM stuff and settings are a different matter - this is where the proprietary software comes into play.

I'm a firm believer in not fixing things that are working well. I realize people like me make up less than 1% of Drivers out there, however, when something works well, and has consistently made me good returns on a minimal investment, I leave them alone. So I guess the short(er) answer is, no, have not used any of these, or any, devices because they do not provide me any other information I don't already have. -
Right, I've actually was wondering if anyone using platforms or software that collect trip data from OBDII / J1939 / etc. to optimize your fuel consumption or/and preventive maintenance? Which one you are using? what you like / don't like / why decided not to use?
Just edited the original question to get more specific -
I came across a few of those. Are you seeing any actual improvement in fuel and maintenance costs? Most of them look like just a Big Brother to watch the drivers
