OLD DOMINION WAS GOOD TO ME. But, their safety department at the time I worked for them needs some consideration. What I did first to get it off my chest in short term that cause them to let me go. Off duty at home in my p/u With a BAC of .08 in CA. Had I been in AZ at the time (1997) I would have walked away and might still be with O.D. today ? (new drivers don't drink) (your CDL will go to hell) Anyway this is how things turned out. I let dispatch know right away and they said come to work until your court date. So I did, running wild on a team truck all 48. When the western regional safety manager got word of this it was time to let me go, or so they thought ?.When you have stuff tied up in court you can keep running, so I did. (paying my lawyer month to month) (this can prolong penalty dates)
We(team) do not no who had me pulled from the truck but I was moved to dedicated CA. to CO. (miles getting shorter) (not a bad run) Then I was moved to a solo run up and down the California cost, about 500 miles plus, each way. On a night I will never forget I pull in to Sac CA. its raining hard and its a closed up O.D. yard. (I have key) Need to drop a set and p/u a set. To this day I don't know if it is sinister or not, I will never know, I would like to think not. Both my pups (trailers) are so low the fifth wheel will not go under and one pup is squeezed in so tight the landing gear will not turn.It took me an hour 1/2 to get them out (how is a long story,no help just me) My load was on time. So what does O.D. do with me now ?.
Thy move me to overnight freight, still being paid by the mile. Now driving a 100 miles in my own four wheeler just to get to work. No place to sleep in the day cab that I'm driving now and I'm Starting to burn out, so I pull my big truck over one night in the fog and said to myself F it, I'm done ! (should not stop in fog) After about 20 minutes I told myself to keep going, but the truck would not move. I went over to far and sank into the soft shoulder, it took two hooks (big tow trucks) to pull the truck out.
An 800 dollar tow bill that is on my DAC (hireright) to this day.
At my terminal they liked me, my manager fought with safety all the time to keep me moving, but all most flipping a truck at a stand still was two much for the manager to handle. Thy pulled me from the drivers list but I would not quit, the dispatcher ask me if I would like to work the dock and I said yes, the feeling was that O.D. is hoping I say no. The next day the dock foreman ask to keep me on full time, he had no idea what was going on, but my three years moving HHG sure maid me look good on the way out, it turned out to be my last day.:biggrin_25510:
