One thing that grinds my gears are the guys who blip the throttle while lifting off. No need for it. It just accelerates clutch wear.

I think that's an R-model Mack thing. Guys like hearing that crackle.
-
Absolutely do not do that. Your clutch will get unnecessary wear, as evident by such things as having a hard time getting into gear without grinding.
-
I got a valid reason ... You hate the guy you work for AND are done trucking
-
Blip the throttle? Haven't heard that phrase before
-
Which video is that?Thinkingboutbeinganewbie Thanks this.

You do not touch that clutch unless you are shifting. Into or out of gear etc.
I'll allow the gear tree to go through as required by the engine wherever it might be. Ive gotten pretty good at it. Up shfting and downshifting often but not allowing engine to get abused. -
It's at the 4:22 mark, but I see what he's doin now.

There are two major reasons why you should never "ride the clutch". The first is serious wear, tear, and damage to the truck. Folks have already chimed in about this.
The second reason why you should never develop the habit of riding the clutch is because of how the Jake brake works. The Jake is designed to turn off by either flipping the switch to the off position, engaging the throttle even a fraction of an inch, ENGAGING THE CLUTCH EVEN A FRACTION OF AN INCH, or if your rpm's drop below 800 (so the Jake won't stall the engine).
When I was a trainer often the hardest folks to train were experienced drivers with bad habits. I had such an experienced trainee at the wheel who had a habit of riding the clutch. Although she had years of experience, all that was below I-40. She had never descended a big hill. We were descending Cabbage Hill westbound and she was freaking out because the Jake wasn't working. She ended up riding the brakes. I was about to pop the fuse panel when I remembered her clutch habit, looked over and sure enough she was resting her foot on the clutch!
"Get your ###### foot OFF THAT CLUTCH!!!"
Instantly the Jakes kicked in.
That was the last time she ever rode the clutch.SingingWolf and Thinkingboutbeinganewbie Thank this.
