I've been checking online and found out that trailers in china cost third as much as they do here in the us.
Beside the obvious concerns:cost of shipping, quality, parts availabilty, size etc.is there a some kind of regulations that forbid the import of these trailers?do they have to be inspected and approved by dot before being put on service?
Any thaughts or input?

Will you be buying the matching aerodynamic truck to go with the trailer?

Mexican trailers cost a couple of thousand less, maybe more in some circumstances, than a good American built one. I have a couple of friends who are members of this forum who really regret their decision to buy Mexican Hyundai trailers.

My concern is not the quality but how the import of such trailers is regulated?

You may want to talk to a company that does Import/Exports. They will might be a better source of information.
Lepton1 Thanks this. -
You need to talk with a customs broker that handles vehicle imports, I've used Schumacher cargo logistics in Gardena CA before to import old vehicles into the USA.
Lepton1 and zinita17601 Thank this. -
There is a little bit more to it than just the tariffs, there is a compliance issue with them that needs to be addressed. The tariff is 3.1% by the way, but by the time you get through the bonds and the other headaches, it would be better just to buy an American made product.
By the way, I've imported from China before, it is not like ordering something from a company and then having it shipped here then getting it and it is a great thing. I've had to hire people over there to make sure that the company actually put the things together right and shipped them off as they said they would. and shipping isn't cheap for large items, may be $6 or $7k and one thing you better be prepared for is being told that it never made it to our shores, a lot of things fall off of ships.cnsper, Dye Guardian, brian991219 and 4 others Thank this. -
Very interesting topic!Definitelly worth investigating. Are you thinking of importing trailers?
How about European trailers?
Some 50 miles from where I come from there is a young and fast growing trailers manufacturing company.I am pretty sure they are able build trailers in accordance with US specs as they already sell trailers to EU,former Soviet Union and Africa. The problem would be currency exchange rate risk but as of now the exchange rate is very good.Lepton1 Thanks this.
