Heart Murmur Anyone?

That's what you tell them if they ask. I know my company would ask and they may even want to see those test results. If you don't have them they may want to run them again. However, that was my company and we were hauling gasoline. But the fact here is the doctor has cleared you to drive. By signing your medical card he is telling the world you're ok to drive.


Here's what the FMCSR's say §391.41(b) A person is physically quailified to drive a commercial motor vehicle if that person- (4) Has no current clinical diagnosis of myocardial infrarction, angina pectoris, coronary insufficiency, thrombosis. or any other cardiovascular disease of a variety known to be accompanied by syncope, dyspnea, collapse, or congestive cariac failure.

The key word here is current clinical diagnosis. And since you've had this forever I really don't think you'll have a problem. You may have to jump through some extra hoops but you may not. Whatever you do be sure to down load a copy of that regulation and keep it with you in case you have to show the company.

 

When I first got my CDl class "B" back in 1990, I found out that I had a heart murmur. It hasn't hurt me for a job or anything since.

 

You shouldn't worry so much. You have the FMCSA behind you so if you can just relax and if it comes up then you can deal with it.

I had a similar experience – it seems that most of the ‘Doctors’ who do the DOT stuff are NOT (Repeat NOT) medical Doctors but Chiropractors. They are not qualified to diagnose treat or even tell you that you have a heart murmur – they usually say some thing like ‘Heart Murmur’ on the form but it is not classified as Medical Advice – a ‘legal’ thing! – they tell you to go to a PCP (Primary Care Physician) – a ‘real’ Doctor for diagnosis without telling you they are not qualified – mine just took my pulse and said ‘I think you might have Arrhythmia’ – of course in California it will take you about 6 weeks to get an appointment – not that they care – So I went to an Emergency Room and was told that they could give me a discharge instruction which would include the negative result for Arrhythmia. They did an EKG and also told me that a DC could not even read it – then when I went back to the DOT DC the ‘doctor’ (notice no caps on ‘doctor’) issued a 2 month certificate – I could take it or leave it – what a rip-off. They are not qualified – they don’t have EKG machines and could not interpret the reports anyway. Frankly the DOT should investigate this practice and STOP IT! Personally I don’t mind getting examined but I really don’t like the way we are being told that we have a heart problem when we have nothing of concern (that was told me at the emergency room – although they didn’t write that on the document, just told me).Oh what a wonderful system we have! Emergency rooms typically tell you to see your Doctor – which the DC seems to use as justification for issuing the restricted time clearance. While I was there 3 others had the same experience.

When these people call themselves Doctors the public should be able to assume they are M.D.’s – Oh I know they have the correct title on the door BUT . . . . .

Note: It is illegal to call yourself an Accountant without being an Active Qualified CPA – shouldn’t the medical profession be the same?

 

Unless he was checked by a doctor and told it was gone, his murmur is still there, or "current".
