I don't think the mega's are hauling freight all that cheap. They go for larger shippers, or distribution where lots of equipment is needed. They have WTF overhead as well. No, they siphon off the money, but they are still getting it.
Also the two best loads I ever pulled ( dry van ), one came from JBHunt, and the other from Swift.
The people driving the rate down are the ones pulling it for nothing.
My boss contributes to that. Although he does have a price that he even won't go below, and will D/H the truck all the way back if need be.
But he makes so much off his direct customers, that making anything just to get the trucks back to those customers is a win.
It's how contracts are written. Yes you can pull our freight for xyz amount, but you have to pull abc amount, and it has to be there on time every time.
So there is no time to fool around shopping rates on backhauls.
Mega's do the same thing on a mega scale for certain applications, and to compound it, they have the street urchins that come in for 90 days and move a few dozen loads for nothing.
Who do u think is really killing the rates

How could Megas influence the rates, if they are 5% (last time I heard) of the truck supply market?
-
Ur rite about that they are small%, its all op that have no idea what they are doing

There's always some #### fool looking to GIVE it away.
Smart man once told me that, not in relation to trucking: but it holds water IMOpassingthru69 and fordconvert Thank this. -
It's been a long time since we had a truck that ran well enough to feel like a king. All these governed castrated rigs whirring like a weed eater is hard on morale. By god what do I have to do to find El Toro that snorts when kicked?
HopeOverMope and 1951 ford Thank this. -
You'll change your mind once you get a little experience on the road

The ruthless efficiency of the internet is one of the factors. All loads and their rates are available for all to see. The information society is a double edged sword. Sure I can find a (insert product here) on Amazon from 10 different vendors at 10 different prices. Same with freight rates. Your front haul is always someone else's backhaul.
lastone in and 77fib77 Thank this.
