    Well, those are my real numbers done by dividing mileage by fuel used from fill up to fill up. Whether you believe them or not so be it.

    I'll maximize my income per mile any day, if you beat me to the truckstop by an hour or so, I'll be OK with it.

    And I'd love to see some figures about how your time is more valuable than the cost of fuel.

    If you want to see even better fuel mileage, draft behind a Swift or Knight co. truck.

    I try to do that almost every week on mt way to LA, but on the way home I'm usually balls to the wall.

    What about all the other components that take more of a beating at faster speeds? And though engine hours are still engine hours, replacing an overcooked turbo because of hard driving really is expensive...for example

    Your numbers with Phoenix to Houston turn @ say 2352 miles: 415 gallons @ 71mph, 360 gallons @ 66mph, 318 gallons @ 62mph : 5.66mpg , 6.53mpg, and 7.39mpg.

    If you take Cummings rule of thumb for 1mph increase over 55mph decreases efficiency by .1mpg your numbers are way off Cummings estimates: .1 ( 71mpg - 62mpg) = .9mpg difference is what you should expect. You reported 7.39mpg - 5.66mpg = 1.73mpg difference far more then expected.

    Listen, I am not just going by Cummings rule of thumb. My experience tells me also that those numbers are way out of line. Believe me or not, I have checked fuel mileage number on a verity of trucks and conditions, and have never come up with numbers like that. However, almost every one that reads the fuel computer in the truck comes up with numbers like you quoted. I have been in this argument before.

    It is the same math one uses to come up with fuel milage figures. You know how to do that? Give it a try.

    Running at 71mph over 2352miles = 2352/71 = 33 hours
    -Running at 62mph over 2352miles = 2352/62 = 38 hours

    The difference being 5 hours

    With your fuel savings at 415gallons - 318 gallons = 97 gallons

    97 gallons say @ $2.20/gal. = $213.4

    $213.4 / 5hours = $42.68/hour.

    As an O/O you would have to be selling your truck service for less then $42.68 an hour to make bank on lowering your speed from your inflated figures.

    @ 71mph and $2 @Mile freight your truck should be collecting $142 a hour: $42.68 savings an is not worth it even with your inflated figures.

    And I say the real savings, from real mpg figures, from lowering your speed is about half of what you report: so about $20 an hour vs $142.

    Well as stated, those are my real world numbers. Calculated at the pump. Nothing more nothing less. It is 1192 miles from pu to del. I added 8 for truckstops and the like.

    So, the problem I have with the 40 an hour calculation, is that many oo's only do a certain amount of mileage a week and are paid percentage. Ie. I get a 2400 mile roundtrip. This was my week. It paid a certain amount whether I complete it in 34.5 hours or 40 hours.

    So let's use this trip as example.

    Pay TTT was 3617 (3100 lh, 517 fs)

    OK so let's compare the different fuel scenarios.

    At 62mph. 318 gallons x 2.25 (avg after discount) = $715.50

    At 71mph. 415 gallons x 2.25 = $933.75

    Scenario 1... 3617 - 715.50 = $2901.50

    Pay per mile after fuel 1.21

    Pay per driving hour $72.54

    Scenario 2...3617-933.85 = $2683.25

    Pay per mile after fuel 1.12

    Pay per driving hour $77.78.


    So yes, I drive a tad bit more, and make a bit less per driving hour. But to me, it's about the bottom line. Which is most always higher when driving slower.

    Are you native American? If not, you are also a foreigner, just not in the first generation. Also, the gazillion of Mega LP operators are good old rednecks and African-American, you rarely will see a fresh immigrant in that division.
    Another thing. In Michigan, where I live, lots of people hate Canadian truckers and blame them for cheap freight, even though I tried to explain numerous times, that not many Canadians take risk of hauling freight inside the US.

    I had to read this 2x to make sure you weren't being funny. That is trucker math defined. Unless he dropped a gear (which he didn't or he would have said) it's the same number of engine revolutions between point A and point B regardless of speed. But I will admit you made me think.
