EGR.......

    So, before anyone hollers at me and tells me this has been answered 100 times, please know that I went back 10 pages an only found 1 that referenced the EGR. So, rather than hating on me, if you could direct me to the appropriate thread, I'll do so. But, until then.......

    1. 2009 Cascadia with a DD15, 850k on the clock, very, very well maintained......I do either the Doser Valve or the DPF every year, depending on which one goes bad.

    2. Symptoms.........
    Using about a half gallon of coolant per week
    Soot in the reserviour
    Occasional puff of white smoke (maybe every 2-3 weeks)
    Power is very good, no problems at all
    Almost never do a manual regen, (when I do, it usually means something is going bad).
    Occasional yellow regen light comes on for a few seconds after running hard and taking the off ramp and stopping at the light.

    Everything I read tells me the EGR Valve or EGR Cooler is going bad........there haven't been any fault codes, but I'm concerned about the use of coolant. Any advice? Thank you in advance.

    Engine definitely ready for overhaul. Coolant loss could be a head gasket problem or EGR cooler. Soot in coolant is really bad sign.
    Do the cooling system pressure test and try to find where coolant is leaking. Let it sit pressurized over night.

    Thank you for listing out your vehicle properly!

    At any rate, I am also suspicious of your EGR as well that could be leaking. Did you per-chance take litmus strips in the coolant to detect HC? If so, It could either be your head gasket or very well confirm the EGR cooler leaking. I'd be curious to know.

    Pull off the tube that runs from the EGR cooler to the EGR valve. If it's wet inside then your EGR cooler is leaking.

    a cracked head would mean you'd be getting water into the sump, check your oil for signs of any water a head gasket would lose you lots of compression a blown head gasket you would of heard a loud bang so its just a process of elimination.

    yeah, no water in the oil, no visible leaks on the ground, so that tells me it's going up the pipe. So, until it starts throwing some fault codes, I guess I'll just have to wait. Seems like mechanics today can't fix anything unless the computer tells them so.........

    Pull one of the EGR pipes & check to see if there is coolant deposits there.
    It will most likely show up as white deposits in the tube.

    ok, so would that make the EGR valve or the EGR cooler bad? I read somewhere that if you have any kind of moisture / funkey stuff in the pipes, meant that you had a problem.

    so, I just watched another You Tube video........looks like the EGR valve is the indicator of a bad EGR cooler.

    Ok, so, if I replace the EGR cooler, do I also need to go ahead and replace the EGR valve? I don't mind if I do, because that's kinda how I roll.......if it's probably or maybe bad, just replace it. This kind of maintenance philosophy has kept me off the side of the road for 3 years. It's like, look, it's about to go bad anyway so you can replace it while it's already in the shop, or you can wait and get towed to the shop for an additional $500.

    Any thoughts?

    I'm kind of gun shy now about replacing things. I got a bad doser valve (leaked a lot of coolant) and now have to wait 3 months to get my money back.
