Well, after several years of research and getting financially in position to I am headed to school at Millis Transfer in Eden, NC. I made it to the hotel about 5:30 this evening after some tire trouble with my friends car that I'm using to save a little on a rental. In hindsight I should have went with the rental but as long as it gets me to and from school each week I'm happy. So far I haven't got a roommate but expect one to come in later tonight just hopefully not too late.

The hotel is not a dump and not a 5-star facility but it is clean and has a fridge, microwave and coffee maker. There is also a Walmart directly behind us so I plan on going tomorrow evening to pick up some sandwich stuff for the week. Hotel has breakfast and school has lunch covered so I am looking to eat light at the hotel for dinner.

Really excited about this new adventure in my life and nervous about it at the same time. I am going to unwind a bit now and rest up for tomorrow. I will keep this up to date daily hopefully and give yall my take on this adventure with Millis.

Day 1: Today we started with the hotel breakfast which had the usual continental breakfast. Waffles, oatmeal, grits, cereal, fruit, muffins, milk and juices. It was nothing special but free and that is for me!

First part of school was a mound of paperwork and seeing how many people didn't bring exactly the things they told you to bring in the emails. I double and triple checked to make sure I had everything but I guess some just weren't as prepared. The instructor went over the company for us and I had already heard everything he told us and am still glad I picked this company and hope to work for them for a long time. We also went to take our drug tests before lunch.

For lunch we were given $10 gift cards for KFC, Pizza Hut, McDonalds, Subway and Bojangles for the week. Today our instructor treated us to Mexican at a nice little sit down restaurant here in Eden. It was very good and I'm still full so I will save some money on dinner. I plan on getting some sandwich stuff from Walmart to hold me for dinners but with $10 for lunch I should be able to fill up just fine.

After lunch we went into logbooks and HOS a little to continue in the morning. He showed us about borrowing hours on hour 14 to keep from doing 34 resets when possible. We didn't get into it too much but I have a pretty good understanding of it from the last time and what I've read and seen online.

Tomorrow we finish up HOS and dive into trip-planning and map reading. For now I plan on doing my homework for the week and then watch a little TV. The roommate finally made it in about 10 last night so no room to myself. I guess I need to get used to tight quarters with another person though...lol.

Day 2: Today we went over HOS and logbooks in depth and then did map reading and trip planning. I enojoyed it and found it pretty easy. We went into the trip planning way more in depth than the last class I was in. We had to actually plan a trip from Miami, FL to Billings, MT including mileage, route, # of days and plan out our stops for breaks.

Tomorrow we get in the trucks and do the Millis 500 around the yard all day. Really look forward to not sitting in a classroom all day tomorrow! A few of us will be going on a trip with our backup instructor next week to Cartersville, GA then up to Wisconsin and back to Eden, NC. I hope I'm in that group for sure.

Well I'm off to unwind my brain. Knocked out all my homework last night so I am a free man.

Day 3: The Millis 500. Today we rode around in circles learning about double clutching and shifting gears. Having already got my CDL I was ahead of the group but definitely had lots of rust to knock off but was feeling good about it by lunch. For lunch we went to a local restaurant here in Eden and I had an amazing meal. It was chicken tenders covered with french fries, cheese, bacon and ranch dressing. I was suppose to be dropping a few lbs. during school but so much for that.

After lunch we were back under green flag conditions in the Millis 500. Since I was doing well I let a fellow student who was struggling drive in my turns for a while and gave him some pointers. I'm not going to go into depth about fellow classmates but some aren't getting but think they are ready to roll. Its those kind of attitudes that cause problems. People that think they need no practice. Even me knowing how to do it I still practiced shifting every time I got in the drivers seat. Others just got up to 5th or 6th and coasted around all day.

Tomorrow we hook up to trailers and get to pull a few around. I'm looking forward to it. I'm off here to wash this dust off me and get some rest.

Seems like Millis is really training you guys well. There is lot more to this job/career/lifestyle than just 'holding a steering wheel'. Once you get out school. Hopefully you will get a good trainer. I don't work for Millis nor have I. I am hoping I will be soon. When I started in 2003. My first trainer was just in it for the extra money. He and I only lasted 1 week. (long story that didn't end well for him) My second trainer was AWESOME. He had 30 years of experience. Very personable though he could be very direct. I was on his truck for 8 weeks. With about a 4 day break during Christmas. I was able to hit the ground running.

Good luck!!! It is going to be challenging. You will have up days and what the %^%^%^%$ am I doing out here days. Once you get your 6 months. Get your 1 year in. Then your second year. Learn from your mistakes
This also goes to all the new drivers. Keep it up! You got this!
