Injector cups & the big EGR valve are the known issues with the D13. Once done that's it.

When I bought my 670 used, the dealer had about 10 trucks in the shop with engines torn apart.

    8 Cummins
    1 Detroit
    1 Cat

All the mechanics said the same thing, don't touch the Cummins.

Awhile ago our local Shaker dealer had two identical '16 Cascadia's. One with a DD15, one with a an ISX
( and it was a 500HP ). IDENTICAL trucks in all respects, same color.
The ISX version was $24K cheaper than the DD15.
I was going wow. Can there really be $24K worth of grief in that motor?
A huge part is the after treatment in a Cummins as well.
Countless horror stories of guys dropping HUGE dollar amounts on the after treatment systems, in all manufactures with the Cummins.

That's why I'd like to see some real world feedback on the X15. It's probably a little early yet.

The DD16 is a turkey as well. I've talked to a dozen guys with Star's & Coronado's that said they were nothing but grief, and many died before 100K miles.

    I'll get our mechanics input.

Well now I wasn't arguing which I think is the better motor, I was just responding to your comment about which was more expensive during a inframe.

I think the "which motor is better" conversations been going on for 50 years and no one's ever won. I prefer volvo power trains as they've cost me the least. Right now my isx is hands down the best motor I have but that is only because of rawze and his forum giving me information on it that 90% of mechanics don't even know..... but it comes at a cost..... that isx is real high maintenance. I'm always needing to tinker with the bloody thing whereas my volvo engines don't need squat.

    I'm going to miss the D16! I don't want a #### D13 hauling 140,000lbs but I'll have to because I love the I shift.

    KB3MMX Thanks this.

So the isx is the only choice for a 15L 600hp/2050...?

Yup. I just spoke to my dealer and for me I'm #### outta luck cause the d13 only offers the compounding turbos up to 80000lbs. He said I may be surprised by the d13 though because it is a whole new engine since they put common rail injection on it. He said the d16 never used common rail..... I didn't realize that.

Seems it's the isx and that's about all. The sales guy at Volvo said word out there is that detroit is talking about dropping Thiers as well.

I have a 13' Mack with the MP8 445hp. They injector and injector cups were replaced in 14' under warranty but literally today had to replace one injector and cup. UGH. I do wish they offered a 15L engine in the Mack and Volvo product line with the IShift, MDrive, Went from a manual and love the IShift. It seems all the manufactures are going to the 13L engines only with higher HP. Cummins and Detroit are the only ones left, and it's really just Cummins.

It's really about emissions. The D13 is actually a stronger motor than the D16 internally and offered up to 900hp in marine apps.

Hopefully they will offer a 2050tq spec D13 for the HH guys.

It's just not the same. Anot her owner op I run with has 2 2014 volvo both 500 1850 with I shift and 358 gears, 1 is a d13 and the other a d16. We haul the same load to the same place every day, loaded at 140k there empty at 60k back.

Not only does the 16 litre eat the 13 for breakfast on the hills but the driver is done his day almost a hour earlier travelling the same governed speed and it uses less fuel because it stays in top gear more.

Once again though, the d13 common rail injection didn't come out till 2016 and I'm sure that will make it better suited.
