High Wind Driving

At what wind speeds/load weights do you recommend parking? I haul 2 axle dry van across crows nest, wondering at what point the winds are too risky?

Surprised no one else has replied to this! Each storm is different, just as each load on a common carrier is different, just as each section of highway is different.
If you are a new driver, it is a hard call to make. Get too brave, and you lay it over. Be too timid, and you don't make your appointments, therefore you don't have a job.
You just have to learn to judge it by the seat of your pants. There is no cookbook recipe for this.
Most long term drivers don't have too much trouble with judging it. You can tell when it is time to slow down, you can tell when it is time to slow down from your slow down, and you can tell when it is time to stop.
Again, a seat of the pants thing. If you feel your truck being blown around too much, then it's time to do something about it. If trucks around you are being blown off the road, it is way PAST time to do something about it.
I don't know anything about "crows nest," don't even know where it is. But if you are in canyon country, or even in rolling hills, you can get some nasty cross winds.
Now I've rambled on here, I know your question is still unanswered.
I guess the only answer really, is to use your intelligence, coupled with your experience.

Crows Nest is the pass on hwy 3 between BC and Alberta. Winds up to 100kmh (60+mph). Obviously those speeds are unsafe, but I get mocked on the CB when I slow down for winds half that speed. On another occasion I was scolded by more experienced drivers for going on (no clue what wind speed was that day). I was hoping to learn a rule of thumb, like at what speeds Wyoming shuts down empties/loaded? My comfort level appears to max out 50kmh/30mph if I have less than 18,000kg/40,000lbs on board - how does that match your experience? Am I being unreasonably paranoid or just safe? (or both!)
Fwiw, I'm coming up on 5 years, so I'm still a newbie!

 

yeah stay off the road till that weather system passes is the best thing to do.

 

I'd ask this driver what his weight/wind speed was and suggest parking just under that.

There's a bad spot about 700km west of me where the winds get very bad off the ocean. Often shutting down truck traffic. Few years ago some guys got in a whole heap of trouble when they were caught running that stretch side by side (2 lane highway) with load trailers blocking the wind for the empties. They got away with it for a good while until they ended up forcing some 4 wheelers onto the shoulder.
