    Even Verizon has dead spots.

And the wireless print app requires hot spot to network to printer. no signal. No hotspot.

Might be able to use Bluetooth though. if one can find a Bluetooth printer. And it's reasonably priced.

To the OP. You have a phone. Experiment with that before deciding to buy a tablet. they're both the same thing. One just does more then the other. ( phone ). And your tablet will need a GPS chip. GPS tablets aren't as cheap as a basic tablet.

You are correct. If I was on my own I would just use my android phone, but since I have a gaggle of trucks and drivers - some with iOS and some with Android and a variety of plan types, I just supply a generic tablet in the cab with a large AT&T data plan.

unfortunately i bought my truck before the e-log mandate came out its a model year 2000 with a late 99 build date and a 99 engine. but its a 2000 by the vin so im kinda shafted. iv put a bit into it to set it up good for me and its a good truck so i guess i am stuck unless it gets thrown out/delayed ect. to try to find another truck that was a 99 or older get it setup and go threw the truck like i have this one would cost me way more money than going elog.

i do already have wireless hotspot on my phone, and it works pretty well. yeah doesn't work everywhere though.

there are a lot of times it would be convenient to have a printer/scanner in the truck. for more than just logs so i will probably look to get a printer/scanner for the truck as well. hopefully find one that doesn't take up too much room

If u get an android tablet, u can get an adaptor (micro-USB to standard USB) which will allow connection to printer/scanner.

After loading/receiving document, just send/print as normal via email/fax app

    Easy as 1,2,3

Our company just started installing the JJ Keller Mobile ELD's in 175 tractors. The Keller rep who trained us said as of Jan 9 2017 the law was the officer can ask for printed logs, but is required to be able to wait up to 48 hours to get them, without holding the truck. Another item the JJ Keller rep said was that in California and several other states, the officer is not allowed to touch the device, the driver is required to be able to manipulate the device to show him what he wants to know. They supply a laminated card for that purpose.
Although the system will use either phones or tablets, I opted to get an At+t 8 inch tablet dedicated for this and other trucking purposes, separate from my phone or other electronic devices. The tablet was $149, free with a 2 year contract extension. As you can see mounts of all types are available.

Somehow I don't see an officer waiting 48 hours for logs. After the truck is long gone.

I run Big Road with a 7" tablet and found a heavy duty suction mount at a TA. Had to glue the plate down for the suction on the dash but it works great. But that is all I use it for. No taking it in and out. Just duty status changes.

AT&T now gives 10 gigs hotspot per month on their unlimited plan as of 3/1/17.

Data use is nothing on ELD's.
