True
Not hard at all to prove you need any worker; just run an add at the local job source with requirements no one can meet or a pay scale no one wants.
69,684 in 2015. More now.
Although many overstay their visas.
No, many employers will take any language. Many states not only overlook the regulation requiring english speakers for a CDL but hire interpreters for taking the CDL tests.
And don't forget the H2a visas. It is hard to get recent numbers but in 2012 it was around 165,000. Quite a few of those get CDLs and overstay their visa also.nax Thanks this. -
Alot of the drivers that I've talked to that have experience owning and operating failed due to drivers. It sucks and that's part of why the big companies are ever growing.
I'm currently in the process of building up the balls necessary to quit my company position that is great in every way except for governed speed (65) and a no pet policy.
The last couple days after getting approved for a lone mountain trucks I'm starting to think that maybe I should hire on with a couple of good people that are describing what u r. I haven't read thru all the posts so idk how solid ur freight is and what prices ur getting. I love the idea of being able to find my own loads via load boards and figure out just how cut throat these brokers and agents are.
Anyways.. I have been driving for just under 3 years. No points.. clean record. Pulled fb sd rgn (only a few times) about 30 oder loads now, largest was a 14' seal that went to coulee ####. That was a fun tarp btw.. lol
Anyway, reach out if your still looking for drivers. Maybe I can fulfill and learn the o/o thru yall other than starting by myself. -
Sometimes I think I'd like to hire a driver and have some help. What a daunting task though. I'd do it legit w2 and all. I'd even try to help with health insurance after say 90 days if I thought I had a good employee. I've talked to a few drivers looking and they all say something that turns me off of the idea.
I worry too about keeping someone happy enough they'd take care of my equipment and customers and what they haul. I would think I could pay someone $1000/wk average and most weeks only be gone 2 or 3 nights. -
As a (very) small time outfit, it is absolutely more difficult to recruit than the megas. Which doesn't really matter, because we can't hire newbies because of the insurance requirements.
Why would any well-qualified driver come to work for a startup? If it isn't wages, benefits, or other compensation, what is it? New trucks, home time, easy freight, great lanes?
I think fleet owners have lost their mind as far as what is reasonable to expect from a driver at a middlin' to fair wage. Out weeks at a time? Minimal or no benefits? Inconsistent income? Working 70 hrs a week (I mean, REALLY?)? Missing family events and unable to be part of the community? Dangerous work and lousy working conditions?
Of course there is a shortage of drivers willing to work those jobs. Most new drivers come to their senses after a short period of time and realize they can work anywhere for 70 hrs a week and make better money.Toomanybikes Thanks this. -
I didn't read everybody's comments but if your paying a 1099 and no insurance what do you expect to bring in?Unless you have w900's or 379/389 Petes you will never get good drivers as there is no incentive for good drivers to work for you!
Speed_Drums Thanks this. -
Huh?
Does that even make sense?
I don't see how a Pete translates to good driver -
If your going to pay on 1099 and no insurance you better have nice trucks or the only drivers you will get are the ones you don't want understand?
-
They got petes? Can I pay you to work for you?
-
I dont see anything that says "Pete" = Nice Trucks
So a reliable, comfortable, money maker is not a desirable tool of trade to earn a living with?
You telling me that you are that simple minded?...wow
