Hey thanks for reaching out. I currently am a company driver, I have 17 months driving, but I have the opportunity to run my friend's truck. It's a '97 KW T600. All the guts are have been replaced so its ready to roll again. Good thing is that I won't have any payments to make.
So basically what I want to know is how to get the accounts. Who do I call in order to pull cans out the port?
I'm in Eastern NC and both the Wilmington NC and the Morehead City NC ports are an hour away from me.

Reach out to the customers you want to pull for, brokers that have container loads and the shiplines. First you have to be registered with uiia, the ports, have the proper insurance (some shiplines you need workman's comp to pull their container), dot# and mc#

Thank you. That is some great info. I'll be definitely doing my homework with the information you provided.
Are you planning on doing regional runs with your loads or is there a possibility that you can deliver somewhat locally and be home every night?

I did this for a period of time because I HAD to be home but the money was less than company driver. Had times that guys driving for others made more than was being offered to me. I sucked it up for almost a year to be home with wife then was able to get back to OTR.

TallJoe, RollingRecaps and Samdaman Thank this.

I see what you're saying. Sometimes you gotta make that sacrifice but at least you know what didn't work for you and moved on. I'm looking to be home more often because I have other things I need to do outside of the truck so I'm hoping this will work for me. Thanks driver.

That is why I did it. If I thought is was going to be long-term, I would have gotten out of trucking or gone to a company driver position. Remember, you are a business person first. And if the business doesn't work, why do it? Find something else.

    RollingRecaps Thanks this.

I'm looking to do mostly local but willing to stay out a night or two occasionally. Otr is not even an option for me been there, not going back

Same here. I want to be home every night but once in a while I'll want to take that high paying load that will have me on the road for a couple nights.
How much money would you say is needed to get started?...Not including truck payments or fuel. Pretty much permits, insurance, uiia code, etc
