I think first things first. First those affected need to begin a discussion about it and start presenting enough ideas that make a sort of consensus begin to emerge. Then at least we can be doing something besides griping and have alternatives to present if an opportunity arises to try and push to fix a flawed system.
If it can't be changed in the next 4 years, the window will be closed and never opened again.

I can do work 50 hours straight through pacing myself. And I will need about 21 hours sleep to pay the accumulated sleep bill owed the body. The first 9 whould be joyous and the least9 soul b a testiment to tehcep
I prefer to put in a good 16 to 20 on the road and get going when the body says that' enough, get moving however long or short that takes.quatto Thanks this. -
Get rid of the 70/8 and and make it 70/7 and dump the 30 min break!
MidwestResident, JPenn, x1Heavy and 2 others Thank this. -
Hard to argue with that.
Very helpful for driver productivity. Sensible, reasonable, simple and easy to implement, helps to reduce fuel island lurking.
... Or blend this idea with one earlier that allowed shorter non-driving to count as qualifying DOT breaks such as a 10 minute off duty or fueling break.
Now, can we or should we do something with the 14 hour countdown clock?
Maybe allow an extension of the 14 [with drive] so long as 11 hour drive is not violated? Or perhaps allow this extension only following excessive loading or unloading delays or other unforeseen events that causes excess delayLast edited: Mar 16, 2017

... Maybe allow 2 hour off duty or sleeper breaks extended the 14 like 8 hour sleeper breaks currently do?
Ryan423 Thanks this. -
Toss the 14 hour clock. Do the same with the railroads. 16 hours work day period. 11 hours to drive to customer and 5 to potentally unload freight at a designated minimum of 500 per trailer to the driver that does it in 5 hours. At the 16th hour, whatever is in that trailer has to wait until 8 hours bye bye sleeper time is finished. Since some places take two days to load and some others a day to unload 8 hours is not a inconvience.

I've had a few thoughts on this subject but nothing solid, I would like to work with out the current limitations.
Another item that pops up here and there with not only the public but driver's themselves is the view of the job as nothing more then a steering wheel holder. sure, there are different levels of responsibility and heightened awareness but I see this view as a growing problem. how seriously will a professional driver be with such a view? -
We should at least drive like the Canadians.. So they don't have to lose time when they come down here.
So to begin with, at least 13 hours to drive daily. Now, this doesn't mean you have to drive them, like now you don't have to drive 11. But it would be nice to have for those days you just feel like going and or find a parking spot after you complete your 650-700miles. I think personal responsibility applies here. Don't drive tired
No 14 or 16 hours duty time like Canadians. I don't want the clock ticking down my neck, any on duty time doesn't count against your day like back in the day.
I like the 10 hours off. For flexibility we can revert back to the old ones. Instead of 8 let's do 10 but you can do a 5/5 split for those who like to do it that way maybe.. I don't know if that will complicate things
No forced 30 minute break, I think it's stupid. I'm going to be stopping throughout the day as it is.. why require me to have one of 30 minutes when the computer days and not when I want..
And obviously no 70/8 60/7 BS. Make it 90 hours or don't have it at all. If I want a day off I'll just ask for it. Here in reefer we get to sleep plenty at almost every end with unloading times.
This will give us the tools to perform, for those of us who want to make money. If my truck ran 75-80 and I could drive at least 13 hours which I can do safely I would be getting 800-900 miles in every day for the most part. Makes for a decent paycheck
One can only dream lolOxbow Thanks this. -

"If 3 drivers are super productive, we don't need the 4th driver"
Half of our society sees that statement as great and the other half sees it as terrible.
But beyond that you have to consider that some who hear "drivers can drive more hours" interpret that to mean "there will be more tired and hazardous drivers on the road"
Messaging and presentation will be critical
