Interesting article. When I worked for Swift we had to do simulator training, it had 3 big screens around you while you sat on a truck seat retrofitted with a steering wheel shifter, pedals, etc. It was like a video game but it didn't deliver the experience of driving a truck fully I had no sense of depth, speed, momentum, weight of the load. I think having a driver in with the autonomous nature of these trucks is a more feasible and safe direction to go on.

I don't know about sitting for that long in front of a screen day after day.

Autonomous trucks are coming. To what degree and how fast is debatable. The best thing for new drivers to do is take the sweat pants and flip flops off, learn how to drive 10, 13, and 18 speeds, offer a service, and become a true asset. They aren't trying to replace drivers. Just steering wheel holders.

My UPS driver told me they are trying to get line haul done by a pilot driver being followed by 5 or so robot trucks hauling doubles.

The human lead would set the precedent of speed/lane & the robot trucks would be computer linked to his truck, being able to instantly match his moves & stay close enough to each other to draft behind saving on aero drag.
