Best to go to dmv and get a new practice cdl road book and ask them if they know of any companies that rent trucks for road test.
Alot of these companies leave their trucks on dmv yards. -
Just make sure to do it in the state you live in.

Get locked into a school is as bad as a bad lease to own.
Find a rental company, owe nobody nothing. -
After he gets back his CDL let him know that even if he stops working as a CDL he can/should keep it. He doesn't have to keep a valid medical card, he can just self-certify one of the options that says "exempt from medical card requirement". If I recall, there is A. driving INTERSTATE and have new medical card. B. Driving INTRASTATE and have new medical card. C. Agriculture _ exempt from Medical card. D. something else.
Then if he ever goes back to driving on his CDL he just need to get a fresh medical card and self-certify he has one. A family member has a CDL doesn't drive a truck but was paying for a fresh medical card every 2 years until we found out how to use the self-certify categories. -
Has he actually asked your local DOT/DMV what he needs to reinstate it? Some states have time spans that he might just have to pay a fee...
