Ok, that VIN shows the ECM calibration is OUT OF DATE and needs to be done. There is also an open recal for ECM calibration update, so this will be covered under warranty. Former JB Hunt truck. Very strange, shows no common repairs at all! Red Flag in my opinion. Basically this has never had an EGR valve or EGR cooler or exhaust manifold rear section reseal repair or any after treatment servicing done. These are all 100% failure items and if they haven't been done yet, then guess what!

This truck has 270k on it and I pick it up dirt cheap at the RB auction in NM. I have a driver picking it up tomorrow and driving it back to Va. With all the posts I read on the Internet I'm hoping it makes it back the 30hr drive.
Thanks for your help. -
Clean the DPF and DOC. The injector has two styles, old and new. Old you replace, new I would clean. The old style has a slightly different body to it where the bolts go through steel tubes. New style has a more robust body and the bolt holes go through the body. You are right, the rear engine cover needs to comes out to service the egr valve and cooler. The egr coolers on those have two sections, a hot side (rear) and low temp side (front). We replace the internal cores only, so there is special tooling for that. Usually the high temp side starts to leak coolant into the exhaust re-circulation and the engine starts to use coolant. So basically you wait until the engine starts to use coolant with no leaks. Then you change the egr valve, high temp cooler and probably the rear exhaust manifold section (because most of them leak), all at the same time. The worst part of the engine is any exhaust related bolts like to seize up, so I hope you are good with a torch! If not, you'll snap them and now you have to drill and tap! Reassemble everything with anti-seize!

Thanks for your help. I know people want to scrap all these trucks but I give it a shot. Were about is the DOC and how do you like to clean them?
-
This is not a DIY thing. It needs to be put into a special cleaning machine. The DOC and DPF are assembled together and are basically where the muffler used to be.
-
Ok. Well the truck made it from New Mexico with no problems. And it's had all brand new tires all the way around. I'm going to get the dpf filter off and get it cleaned. Who can clean the doc?. I'm going to try and get the server records from JB Hunt. to see what we are dealing with. The driver said it never went into regen. in his 1800 mile trip. Is that ok.?
-
Yes, that is fine. The truck does regens on its own. DPF and DOC are cleaned in the same machine. Most major shops have the machines, so a phone call or two is all you need.

Well good news so far. We went to Daytona and back with no problems. It's about 1400 miles. Other than the wind noise on the left door I really like the truck. When I go over 67 mph the down power light comes on.Nothing happens other than the light comes on. I'm not sure if it was a jb hunt pre set that comes on? I had the road speed set to 78 mph. It is nice to hear the radio going down the road and having cruse control. My 94 kw doesn't have that and it's very loud. I did receive all the service records from jb hunt. The only major service was replacement of the radiator.
Heavyd Thanks this. -
So did you add $1400 to your maintenance account for this trip?
-
im looking at a 2014 pro star with a mf13 engine. anyone know if these engines are having the same issues as in the past? truck has 277000 miles on it and only $29,000. its that the reason why they are dirt cheap?
