    Hey folks

I'm out of PA - I got through school, and eventually the testing for my CDL - though it did take me to my third try (backing of course). Having said that, in PA, you get your CDL in the mail - something of which has delayed my getting with a company because it was lost in the mail, and I had to wait to be allowed to go to DMV in-person and get one. In total, its been about a month since I finished testing, with almost 2 months since school.

I went through the hiring process and road test with a local Quality Carriers affiliate that sometimes hires drivers out of my school, but they said I wasn't ready to work for them (I would not call them a "starter" company in the same way as the big OTR and Regional trucking giants, most of the work they do is Local, with a minority of Regional). Granted, I could complain about a few different things - the post office, the way my testing was handled, whatever - but that doesn't quite get me a job nor where I need to be.

I'm the new guy, so I know I need to earn my stripes just like everyone else - having said that, I'm trying to get home time every week as able, preferably Sunday (though I know thats unlikely). I've been told US XPress might be a good match, but other than that, I'm really feeling kinda lost.

Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What do you want to do? Pull van? Reefer? Flatbed? What area do you want to run?

Answer those and people will be able to give you some good solid choices.

I'm not very picky at this point. I've heard flatbed is back-breaking work, and dangerous with tarping, but at this point, I don't feel as if I'm in a great position to bargain. Despite coming from a family with folks in the industry (my dad especially) I've never heard much from anyone doing anything other than van.

Reefer work unloading is backbreaking. Minding a flatbed is more of a mind challenge and throwing some chain, binders and a few rolls of tarps. It's not the backbreaker it's made out to be. Flatbedding is a higher art form when done right. You will have people look at your rig wrapped like a present and know already you are a professional.

Thanks for the insight! I'm definitely looking at all options in front of me, with maybe a preference to van starting out, but will take what I can get.

Most reefer work these days is "driver no-touch" freight.
Old Dominion has been hiring new cdl grads by the dozens in PA. They even sent recruiters to cdl schools looking for drivers. They have line haul and P&D jobs. Old Dominion is considered a coveted job for experienced drivers and new cdl grads.
P&D is all city driving and home every day; but may have a couple dozen stops a day; driver handles the freight.
Linehaul is best; it's drop & hook. Pull a set of doubles from your home terminal and take to another terminal then drop & hook to another set of doubles and back to your home terminal.

I'll dig through my notes and see what else I can find and post it to you.

    Thanks for the heads up!

Heard anything from anyone US Xpress and how they are with new hires/their regional work?

Are you closer to Harrisburg or Allentown?
