Down the street from my house a swift driver smacked a tunnel. The news paper article is as follows:
Early morning commuters were surprised Monday morning when they tried to travel on South College Street. A semi-truck belonging to Swift Trucking Company had attempted to drive through the tunnel and got stuck partway through.
The driver, who only gave her name as Melanie, explained that she was attempting to find her delivery location and was trying to navigate her way back to Highway 51 when she found herself in front of the tunnel.
"I saw the sign saying the height of the tunnel was 9'10" but for some reason, I don't know if it was because it was 5a.m. ad it was dark, I was thinking my truck was 9'6" and I had plenty of room."
In fact, the California driver's truck, was 13'6" in height. "I guess I didn't see the curve of the tunnel," said the relatively new driver. "I've only been driving since February and I'm not even supposed to be this far out east. I guess I've lost my job now."
Making the situation more distressing, Melanie revealed the truck was a brand new one. "I got it brand new," said the embarrassed driver. "It's only got 20,000 miles on it. I just hope they help me get back home."
The cab itself was actually okay, with what appeared the only damage being to the smoke stack. The trailer on the other hand was severely damaged.
After unloading the semi's contents, Jim's Auto Body and Towing, Inc., pulled the stuck semi out of the tunnel and towed it away.
Rober Martin Simpson, director of Covington Public Works said that the state would be notified of the accident so the tunnel could be assessed for any structural damage. No injuries, beyond the driver's pride, were reported.
Date of accident 10.6.08
Covington, TN (SWIFT)

What was she thinking. A lot of difference in 9'6 and 13'6.
Yep probably lost that job.

I would have NEVER admitted that.
She's been driving since February and still doesn't know how tall a trailer is? Hmmmm. -
Geez, that's bad even for a swift driver. No doubt her incident will be plastered on the walls of each and every terminal. How the heck did she survive trucking otr as long as she did is what I wonder.
Any driver can make a mistake but 9"6? WOW!
You could see that you wouldn't fit without any marking whatsoever. I could maybe understand 13"5 and it was dark and you were in a blizzard or a severe downpour maybe, but 9"6 in a TUNNEL? Surely there were signs. -
Look at how far she was up in that tunnel too!
-
LOL she was gassing on it
