I don't truck anymore but would like a CB for my Jeep Grand Cherokee. My question is, do I need some big ### antenna or will one of those short magnetic ones work?

1st suggestion is a Wilson 1000 magnet antenna on the roof. It's over 5 feet tall, but I'm constantly amazed at how well it gets out and hears. Too big? Little wil. It's about 3 feet. Not quite the same performer as the 1000, but it's shorter and less expensive.

I would say go for the Stryker SR-A10 magmount over the Wilson. A little pricier, but from what I've seen, it's better built than the Wilson and the load will probably stay watertight for longer. Those Wilsons have been known to get water inside the load since Barjunk bought them out years ago.

Depends on what you want the radio to do. Are you going to be doing a lot of talking? What type of distance will you need to cover? A wilson 1000 or AR-10 mag mount will work great for making longer contacts and picking up distant stations. But a lil' will antenna will be more than enough just to monitor local contacts and talk 5-10 miles when tuned properly.

    How long ago was that?

I have a Wilson mag mount that I use on trips. Bought it about 12 years ago and it still works well.

Wilson 500 is positioned between the 1000 and Lil Wil, overall height 4ft and load doesnt screw on its solid like the little wil so minimal chance of water getting in.

If you spend a lot of time off road you might want to consider a ball Mount mounted on the quarter panel with a hundred and two inch whip.
If it's just a mall crawler then a Wilson 1000 should be just fine on the roof.

Thanks for all the ideas. I had one of those Walmart antennas on top that was like 12" long and I could only talk to someone right next to me. I don't think I ever picked up anyone. I don't want to talk, just listen and maybe warn someone, that's it. Time to put it back and give it another shot.
