Support Thread for the TND 500, TND 700 or future Rand McNally products. (part two)

Too tired last night after 9 hours of yard work... So will attack this later today... What questions come to mind so I can make sure I cover those..

Remember... this is the next generation of TND, not tablet. Some press releases from the news got this wrong..

I will compare to the TND 720/730 so as to give you a better view of prior models compared to this model.

Freezing - sounds like you got some corrupted DCA's (Map files). Do the MD5 attached and (conversation) with me so I can give you an E-Mail to send the file too.

Screens are bright... have you adjusted in Preferences/General/Brightness? And in day/night mode which is the issue?

Using the RM DC Cord? Plugged into the Slice or side of Tablet?

No.. cannot check other routes without starting trip over and doing compare. I will give this suggestions to the developer

RM has a TND and a Tablet line. The 740 is just the next generation for the TND, not to replace the Tablet line.

TND 740 -

Android Based, but no Browser abilities. This will mean you cannot hook up to any Hot Spots that have a "Redirect" screen that you have to acknowledge such as a Truck Stop or Hotel. You will be able to tell when you look at your Wi-Fi connections it will say "Connected, no Internet." If you see "Connected" only then you are connected to the internet.

Connects to a Hot Spot if you wish to go live via internet with Traffic/Weather/Fuel Prices. Otherwise it will function without the Internet for routing using the GPS Satellite systems.

Blue Tooth is also available to connect to the Internet via your device. Blue Tooth will ask for if you wish for it to access your Contacts and Call History. Bluetooth is just an earlier method to connect to a device, but it has a more limited range for pairing. Don't know why it needs "call history", but will find out.

Same screen size as the 730, screen is touchable with the fingertip, if trying to use fingernail it does not respond well. Stylus does not work well. Pens with the "Rubber" tip work well. I would suggest this type as some of the screens items are smaller and if you have big fingers you may have some issues trying to get to the item you need. This will also protect the screen more.

Micro USB (connection) on Left side. Micro USB port on bottom.

Volume button on top along with On/Off, and a "Home" button. This will take you back to "Home Screen" from any screen.

Screen layouts are different with an intermingling of "Classic" TND screens with the "Newer" style.

You can change back to "Classic" mode in the settings. Same as Classic Skin on the 730.

Uses a "Slice" like the TNDT Tablet. The Slice to TND will only connect one way. It has "-" and "+" inserts to allow a connection. It connects to the Slice via Magnets.

About 2/3 slimmer than the 730. I would suggest a "Tablet" type case for carrying it or storing it.

It is a little heavier than the 730.

Power to the Slice is now a "Barrel" type connector. Power output is 5.3vdc/3.5A.

Screens move fluidly when touching. You can zoom in/out on the screen by using your fingers although you do have a Zoom in/out icon on the screen. I found using a finger on each hand works better and give a little more fluid Zoom in/out.

If you Zoom around and find your location, you can "Long Press" on the screen to get more options.

The screen will "Time Out" after a few minutes in any settings screen that is not "TND" related such as Base Android settings.

Memory is 16gb, but only about 6gb is allowed to the user for things such as Address book or Custom POI's. Moving your TND user files will be easy. I have Procedures written for this already. NOTE - the TND 740 will not be seen by the Dock. Updates will NOT be done by the Dock. Updates are done via the Internet.

You cannot load Apps on it. It comes preloaded with "DriverConnect ELD service."

Updates can be checked under settings., also from the Main Screen at the bottom. You can also effect a "GPS Repair". It shows a date when you last checked for updates so you don't have to remember. Most updates such as construction, POI's, etc are done quarterly. Instances like "Atlanta" will usually need an "Priority" update for Construction. These types of updates are pushed out quite fast.

Screen is vivid. Brightness is controlled under the System Settings/Display.

It does have the MCRA (Motor Carriers Road Atlas) installed like the TNDT Tablet.

On the Map screen you have a "Search" bar at the top. Click on this and you just start typing in the address number first. On the left it will bring up listings. For POI's such as Travel Centers, Weigh Stations, Cat Scales you have an option right below the search box. You also have Address book. Click on that and you can search in your address book.

In testing I put a 466kb address book on the 740. This about max for the 730 address book size. On the TND 730 it takes about 15 seconds to load, on the TND 740 it took about .5 (one half) seconds to load and display. Using the search box you can find the address you are looking for.

Moving user files to the TND-740 via Copy/Paste, it was noted that you have to reboot the TND-740 for it to see your New "User" files.

Speaker output is a little low for a truck. In this case BT it to a Headset or speaker. UPDATE on this.. on the Top is hardware control volume and on the main screen is Software controlled volume,,, both have to be turned all the way up. RM is looking at this. The software control does seem to change the Hardware setting, but not in volume.

1st time acquiring GPS took about 15 seconds. Now it has the GPS information stored it should be much quicker. The 2nd and 3rd time it took about 1-2 seconds to acquire GPS. Note - the GPS receiver is on the back of the TND-740. The Slice also will boost the GPS acquired signal.

Battery life I will test tomorrow.. I ran the battery down doing the testing.,,, UPDATE.. ran route and the battery lasted about 2 hours and 20 minutes. I had it on its back. It is warm, but not hot. It does give you an audible warning about 15 minutes before the battery runs down completely.

The Screen shots I will try to redo. The "lines" are not on the TND.

Map update available for the 530/730. NO SD Card is needed. Make sure you are connected to a high speed connection as it is over 4gb.
