Hi, I graduated from a trucking school and went with a trainer, and then into my own truck with a mid sized company for just under six months. Some family issues came up and for the past 8 months I have been helping out at the family business.

I hope I left on good terms. It happened during my home time and I called and told them and they were very nice and said come clean out your truck and bring us the keys and in a couple weeks or month call us and let us know you're coming back. I called and checked in everyweek, but after a month let them know I didn't know how long I would be away. And that is where it got left.

Now I am all exited and dying to get back on the road around Christmas. But I worry that they wouldn't hire me back. I guess maybe I'm just a worry wart, or all this talk of recession has gotten me nervous.

Anyways, do you think that was a bad way to leave, and is there anyways I can find out if they will hire me back, even though it's a ways away so I can look forward to getting back on the road with excitement instead of worry. Thanks.

Well all i can say man it never hurt to pick up the phone and talk to that certain person and explain to them like you did when you had to leave. Let them know what you've been doing while not driving/the reason you wanted drive for them again.etc. You might have to do some kind of refresher course am guessing.I look at it like this, somethings in this world is outta "human" hands no ones perfect, and to me i think a otr truck driver have to deal with that family crisis issue year in and year out. Some companies frown on that, but hey leave on good term and everything should be swell. I left Schneider & Western Express on the incorrect way period!! I regret it to this day. :biggrin_2554:I called and talk to the guy over the flatbed division himself(email him, contacted him on his cell phone or what not) And i got my second chance to start over with my training this Monday:biggrin_255: JMO!!

I say give them a call, it can't hurt.

On the other hand, I spoke with a driver today that was afraid to take his vacation. It seems his company has froze hiring across the board, and he didn't want to lose the truck he was driving. He would have to clean it out, before he took his 2 weeks off.

He was locked out of OTR for 2 months after taking vacation last year. And was forced to do regional until an opening came up. He's worried there won't even be a regional position to return too, this time.

First off - stop with the worry already. It will not help you at all, and will just keep you upset. But you should get on the phone, as others here have suggested. Just keep in touch with the company periodically.

No one knows what is going to happen next week, let alone by Christmas. Worrying about it is only gonna give you an ulcer. What is going to happen, is going to happen whether or not you worry about it.

No matter how down the economy goes, eventually, it will come back. We are in some rough times now, and likely to get much worse before they get better. It is just a fact of life. About all we can do is take it one day at a time.

Seems to me that everyone is in fact correct you are worrying too much and that wont help you at all. You do not seem like a very genuine person and everyones advice on here is sound in that you simply should just make the phone calls and explain the situation and I am sure they would understand. I wouldnt worry if they told you to just call them when things were in a better situation for you that usually is a positive sign they wouldnt mind having you back. Alot of companies would just say clean out the truck and send you on your way but since you were given a return option even then I believe sir that you will ok and have nothign to fear. As far as the economy yes it is very rough right now but no matter how rough things are stores still need merchandise for everyday living, food for the shelves, clothes for our backs etc, etc, I wholeheartedly believe you will be ok. Take care and I wish you the very very best of luck and hope your family situation that caused you to have to leave the industry for awhile is resolved and everyone is doing well.

Alright, see that's why I ask you guys! Your advice was right, don't worry and call. So I did. They said I was eligible for rehire. Once I knew for sure when I wanted to come back, then call again and they would have to get the papers signed by the bosses and I would go through orientation again.

    Sounds good to me.

North... I'm gonna impart some wisdom on you.

I lost a business one time. Because I didn't speak up. I told the guy I could do it...but I failed to tell him I wanted it.

That was his explaination to me, when they rejected my proposal. That was one costly mistake...extremely so. I haven't made it since.

ALWAYS speak up. The worse that can happen? You get told no.

That is good advice, thank you. How is the job situation looking? Would you recommend I not dally in getting back with the economy faltering or are truck jobs still doing alot of hiring. Also how is winter, more jobs because people quit? Or less because less freight. Thanks for your time.

The job situation appears good from what I'm seeing. Of course the work is a bit slow on some. But, most are hiring.

Don't expect to get 3500-4000 miles a week. Not many companies offering that now days.

Hah! I'll take whatever they give me, but I was always happy with 2400 plus.

Good to know the jobs are still there. I can't wait to get back in my own truck. Thanks.
