I delivered to this warehouse that has only one dock and you have to back in from the street, which happens to be a pretty busy street at that. So I started to set my self up and was backing in when some ### hole honks his horn and I stopped thinking I was about to hit him. He was just being impatient. I wish I would have ran him over. So I had to go around the block to reset. Which turned out to be a better set up anyway, so I was able to back right in without to much trouble.
I am trying to put a positive spin to every thing that is not going so well. If I don't then I will be sitting home looking through the help wanted ads. I am not really ready to throw in the towel just yet. I tell ya it gets hard to say good bye to your wife and daughter though. That has to be the hardest part so far.
For those of you about to start the 10 day program, I would just say to practice whatever you are weakest at. The 30 day people, study your material and practice everything you can. There is so much to this job that they don't really tell you about in school. If you get a chance to ride with an experienced driver while going to pick up your truck, go with them to the delivery if you can. You will learn a lot from it. Ask a lot of experienced drivers questions while at the drivers lounge, most of them are happy to help. There are a few that will just complain, but most are pretty good.
Well I will update as soon as I can. Hopefully my truck will be fixed and I will be back on the road. Be Safe.ScooterDawg Thanks this. -
Harley,
I'm going on day two of the ten day orientation in NJ. Things haven't been rosy for the guys that finished up here last week. One guy got a Volvo with an automatic, and he broke down as well over the weekend. Last I heard his truck is in the shop and he's in a motel somewhere.
Another guy from that same class which ended Friday was still here up until yesterday. He had gotten his truck Friday as well, but couldn't get a load going out because his info wasn't entered properly into the system. He was loaded on his way yesterday afternoon though, and he will be getting layover pay, so things are looking up for him.
I'm glad you're keeping a positive attitude and are optimistic. It's only been one day for me, but this does seem like a good company and I believe it'll be worth it in the long run to stick things out until they get better. -
Great to hear from you, Harley. Keep the updates coming..

Harley,
I can't recall what you said your weight was on your steers. Less than 1000 lbs over...if I recall correctly.
That will not be an issue for you, as long as you are not over gross.
Your tires are rated for 13,500 (check with the shop to be sure). Your axle for a tad more. I would not be too concerned about anything under 13,000 on the steer.
I know Washington & Oregon will look at tire and axle rating if you're not over gross. We used to run out with as much as 14,500 on the steers when I ran with CFI. Some trucks (mine was one) had the 16,000 rated steers. -
My truck if fixed, at least as far as the Cummins service centers says it is. I want to get to the Missoula terminal to have the batteries check since my battery light is coming on every morning. But I need to get on the road and make some money. I hope to get rid of the auto shift soon though, I think I am starting to like it. I don't want to get to used to the auto shift and not be able to use a manual. That wouldn't be good for my career. Oh well, I guess I will wait and see what happens.
Good luck to you all in the 10 day and 30 day program. Just remeber to practice as much as you can. Be Safe. -
Say did you get that auto shift in SFS two or three weeks ago?
If so I drove it from the impound yard and it's a piece of crap. The guy
got a DUI in it. (if it's the same one) Anyway good luck. -
What is W/S policy on chaining? Do they expect you to keep going with chains on, or just want you to get a safe place to park?
-
How many miles are the Western Regional drivers for Watkins/Shepard currently getting at this time of the year. I will be starting in November and do you think that I can average 2500 miles a week.
-
It was explained to us that they don't really expect or ask you to chain up and keep going, the driver has discretion. All they ask is that you keep dispatch informed.
