In most cases a seperate mount and coax will be much more effecient than the factory setup but Im thinking something has to be wrong with either the mount, coax, or antenna.

You may want to check and make sure he used the right coax, if it is a single antenna install the proper coax would be 50-ohm RG-58 A/U or RG-8X, make sure 75 - ohm RG - 59 A/U wasnt used instead, the lettering should be printed on the coax.

That radio is going to be useless with an amplifier unless you repair the damage that was done by the people that sold it to you.
You would actually get much better performance for a fraction of the price by purchasing a Galaxy 959 off of amazon.com and don't let anybody tamper with it.
Listen to this con artist tell me the maximum distance His Radio will transmit is 16 miles on a good day from a car with a 9-foot whip on the roof after his supposed performance modifications.Last edited: Apr 14, 2017

Wolverine, you beat me to it, and no insult should be taken. I bet any of us who have been fooling with radios long enough have done some downright silly things such as hooking up a CB to a VHF antenna or vice versa. Back in November of 1999, Y2K was looming, with all its potential bad outcomes. I had a 92 Ford Explorer that I had put an Icom 2100H in. 2m ham was my backup comms plan to keep me in touch with my mother, 40 miles away, should the phones have gone down. My 2100 started receiving poorly. I checked the antenna, coax, SWR, and RF output, on this radio. All was well. I didn't have enough money to order a new one. I debated about sending it back for repairs and knew it wouldn't be back before 12-31-1999. The problem persisted for a couple of weeks or more. One day, I decided to fiddle with the squelch and set it to minimum squelch and my receive was back to normal. DORF!!!! The squelch on that radio acted as an RF attenuator on receive once turned past halfway toward maximum squelch. For over two weeks, I had agonized over something no more serious than my failure to check the squelch setting, something I almost always do when turning a radio on. I was working a lot of hours at that time and guess I just let something so basic slip my mind.rabbiporkchop and wolverine11 Thank this. -
Not to long ago ( I hate to admit this ) I tried putting the three prong power cord into a cobra 29 and it was backwards and it blew the protection diode, still can't figure out how I was able to even get it partially hooked up with one side rounded and the other square, but I swap out radios so frequently that I wasn't paying attention, good thing for the protection diode because it probably prevented a more costly repair.
rabbiporkchop and bored silly Thank this. -

Did you end up changing anything in regards to the antenna system that helped with the receive issue?
