No reason it wouldn't be legal. As long as it is secured you are good to go.

Bungies don't count for securement! Don't ask me why I know that..... but I do.

Make sure that the lines don't rub on them.

As jumbo said, you can secure them on the cat walk, but if the lines drag on them, it's a ticket waiting to happen.

Thx guys. 7-8 timbers are strapped down on the catwalk deck secured to the frame on 2 sides. I raised the airlines up, no touching or dragging.

For some reason I thought the catwalk may technically need to be "clear of objects". One of those CDL school pre/trip 100-checks test things. Maybe it meant loose objects. Meanwhile I see older drivers using this very spot for timbers (of course secured). Positives are I can now stand taller to access items at the top of my headache rack, and my new stepdeck trailer doesn't have a dedicated spot for 4x4s anyways.

Have you thought about chaining them to the front of the deck? Or possibly behind the step on the lower deck? I have ten 8' 4x4's and have used both spots (Depending on what was being loaded) with out much fuss.

Catwalk being clear is an OSHA thing. I've done it in the past, but only as bobtail never with a trailer.

Build one of these. About $170 in material. It will hold 15 4x4s.
