it is possible. if someone tunes the radio a little too high to the point where something on the board or the board it self cant handle the power going through it, you can easily fry something.... a lot of cb techs will over do radios, and cause premature failure.

i think i'll just leave this one alone. would it do any good to have it tuned but not "boosted?

Okay folks, the legal power limit for a CB radio is 4 watts. His radio was jacked up to 32 watts of power. Gee, if you bump the power up to 8 times what it's supposed to be, do you think that had something to do with why the radio failed.
Peaked and tuned is one thing. Jacking the radio up on steroids is something completely different. This was an expensive lesson to learn. Better luck with your next radio.Last edited by a moderator: Oct 21, 2008
squirrellsgnwild Thanks this. -
Depends on who did the work, and what they did to the radio to get the 32w's...If they went in and changed the finals out, then re-aligned everything the way they should have, then that should not have been the problem...
Main problems with the radios today, is not necessarily always "Who did the tune-up" But rather more with "Who made the radio to begin with!"
Or where it was made..."China"....That's the main problem with radios today! -
well...............

Go's back to "Who you get to do the work"...Some shops will "say they Peaked & tuned" the radio, and charge ya $20 for doing nothing more than checking it out, to see if everythings working properly...
If it were me, and as long as your happy with the way it's working, why would you want someone tinkering around with it?
But if your wanting to get more power out of it, then your back where you started, and at the mercy of the shop that works on it...
Thats one reason I like the Export Radios like the General Lee's, Galaxys, Connex's etc...Only thing you realy need to do to them, is have them converted and aligned for 11 meter...You can also have them Peaked, but then your back where you started again, hopeing the shop guy knows what the heck he's doing, and not going to do a half-##### hack job on your radio....squirrellsgnwild and panhandlepat Thank this. -
umm.... NO WAY!!!

Some solded jocks just turn up the pot that controls the output power. some people know what they're doing.
I've seen guys install "Super Modulators" that were nothing more than a capacitor that someone labled "Super Modulator" soldered across ground, then turn up the modulation pot, and charge $20.
I installed a bridge rectifier in the power input of a radio after a driver hooked it up reverse polarity and burned out the polarity diode. I tried to explain to a solder jocky at the truck stop that it didn't matter which way he put power to it. He said, "Both wires are the same color, if I hook it up backwards it will burn out the radio and cost $50 to repair."
I told him it had a rectifier in it and it didn't matter how he put power to the leads, the rectifier would correct the polarity at the board, and burning out a polarity diode doesn't cost fifty dollars to repair, it costs fifty cents.
He told me there was no such thing, I walked over to the bench and hooked up the power, turned on the radio, then reversed the power leads and turned it on again.
After seeing that he still insisted there was no way that could be done, I told him he was an idiot, took the radio, and walked out. There are only a couple of people who work on my radios, if I can't do it myself, I take it to someone I can trust.
Good luck trying to find a shop that works for you.panhandlepat Thanks this. -
its just like getting your car worked on . do you take it to a shade tree mechanic or do you take it to the certified mechanic ? one will probally get it running , the other will most likely fix it . they are not the same thing .
p.s. nothing against shade tree mechanics . ive been saved by my bro-in-law several times when my vehicles inspection came up and funds were short .squirrellsgnwild Thanks this. -
GREAT! something to look forward to...LOL.
