Bottom layer has to have belly wrap front and back if it's steel pipe. Minimum 2 gut wraps every two layers.
Top layer 1 strap within in first 2 feet and last 2 feet of load. Then split the middle with a strap, then split each section again. Total of 5 minimum.

For pipe? I would prefer a flat. For long pipe on a step you have to invest in those heavy U shaped stakes you chain to the deck so the lower deck is even with the upper deck. I have seen a some step deckers go through the process of chaining them up or stowing them and they do take up quite a bit of room.

I have pulled steps. I own a flat. My personal preference is a flat, at least for the loads I pull for the oil field. I can climb up on a flat easier than a step. A step deck forces me to jump up to sit, then scoot around to get a knee or foot on, and often freight doesn't leave room to make that move. On a flat I can grab the rail and put my foot on top of my 22.5's and hoist myself up in one move, or use the dunnage rack or other points for the step up.

Many of my loads require multiple trips to the deck during loading or unloading, especially directional tool loads. You have to get up close and personal with the load as it is going on the deck to make sure everything is balanced and tight together.

Load levelers or bridges is common. Some double as ramps. Yes, they should be chained ( secured ) in place when used as a load bearing device.

When you run step, you get used to them. They are not so bad once you learn the little tricks to them.

    Orangees and Lepton1 Thank this.
