That sounds like injector cups issue.

I am working on a head right now for a D13, if there are any Volvo mechanics here, can you explain why exhaust port 1 and 6 are clean and intact with no residue build up where 2-5 are completely full of ####? Wouldnt this cause higher EGTs in the head which could cause the head to expand due to extra heat and not good exhaust flow which in turn could loosen up the injector cups? And if the injectors are coming loose with bolts, why are they still using bolts? Studs work better, period. They hold the torque value better then a bolt. Ive worked on cummins, maxxforce, detroits, paccar and now working in volvo/mack engines. Why is this the ONLY engine with so many problems due to injector cups? Whoever said cummins isx was a problem, that is probably the only engine out there that has their emmissions down, and next in line in my opinion is detroit. And this head was swapped out because of the same problem as many of the complaints from this thread, the cups are replaced 3-4times in a span of 1yr or less. This one in particular was done in 8months. Thats 24 injectors, in 8months! Our fleet has a #### ton of maxxforce engines, and in their whole time, they have only replaced 1 injector, in 1 truck. And i was the one to replace it. Im just trying to figure out why is this design so poor, never have i seen or heard so many bad things about this head design/flaw.

I had one Volvo mechanic try to blame it on the engine compression being high. I had to laugh. I have a 1968 m35a2 with the ldt465 multifuel engine that runs a 24:1 compression ratio. Its runninh the same old injectors and heads it has always had. So tell me again about compression being the reason.

Yeah volvo design is crap including hold downs and the crappy 5um filtration for a 30,000+ psi injector!

I'm on my 7th set in 2years. I called OOIDA on this. They told me there was a law suit but it has been closed and settled. Back in 2014. No one else can get in. If there's something else going on out there with volvo. I'm in. What have you heard.

Something that would help if they were a threaded cup instead of press in with anerobic sealant.

The huge problem i see though is Volvo has their "fan on" temp WAY too high and it causes repeated flexing of motor... Expansion and contraction.... That results in leaking cups.

Highly, highly recommend hooking up a manual fan switch.... They are set up to do it in the computer, Volvo just doesn't offer the USA trucks a option...

I have a 2012 d13 900,000 miles that has just developed a hard start problem.

I noticed leaking at the primer just above the block fuel filter and a weak priming ability.

Last week a hard start was cured by replacing the devco filter (it was sucking air there) and priming it like mad.

Ran great all week, sat two days and no start. Couldn't prime start it this time.

Ether started it. Cut off and easy restart.

Mechanic wants to remove fuel line to tank and use s bucket to check for air bubble tomorrow.

How much will a set of cups set me back? He thinks he can replace them for $4000 but thinks the primer assembly should be replaced first.

    Stressed.

I got a rough $6k estimate from Worldwide Equipment. I'm in Knoxville, don't know if they're all the same. Luckily mine are hanging in. One thing he did say is that they're warrantied for a year and often they have to replace them within that year due to crappy Volvo injectors/cups they get now and they can't control the quality.

    Good luck, keep us posted.

the simplest method is using a flashlight looking in the fuel tank for air bubbles coming out of the return.....

I don't see bubbles in the tank. But my mechanic disconnected a fuel line and showed me the bubbling in a clear cup he dropped the line in. He said it wasn't very bad and was probably only one cup leaking.

The air builds in the fuel lines over a two day period and the truck won't start or prime.

So, for now, as long as I start the truck daily, I have enough fuel pressure to keep starting. Starting daily is my temporary fix until I do the 6 pack.

He estimates $600 in labor plus the parts for a total of $4000. Another $500 or so for the primer replacement which is leaking a bit.
