If on a road and my GVWR is 60000lbs but local ordinance says must use truck routes if gvw is 44000lbs if my loads not full and under 44000lbs can I drive around town legally? 2 questions is gvw same as gvwr, and if not at capacity can I deviate off truck routes?

    Stay on truck routes.

    Always.

If you don't expect a policeman standing on your fuel tank talking about taking you into the local jail for a while for violating traffic control devices (Weight restricting signs...)

No, they are not the same.

If a sign is posted for 44000 gvw and you only have one or two skids on board, you'll most likely be legal to use that road, cross the bridge, or what have you.

On the other hand, if that sign says "GVWR" and the plate inside your door jamb reads a number higher than that, you won't be legal on those roads even when empty. The "R" for "rating" changes everything.

    Just to be sure....

    GVW is total weight
    Load + Empty Weight.
It won't take a lot of weight on trailer to reach 44k.

It don't matter, the word gross is on the sign so it is all the same. If it says 44K, then empty or full, it is your gross below 44k.

Actually gross simply means total. As in tare + net (vehicle + load)
So gvw is simply what the cat scale ticket shows.
gvwr is the max that truck can pull limited either by registration or mechanical limits. Usally 80k lbs for a common fleet flatbed or van.

Normally you will have 1 of several restrictions

Trucks over x gvw. (Cant weight more than x)

Axle weight restrictions (3 ton axle limit)

Trucks over x gvwr (what the truck can handle)

As a general Rule GVWR is not about anything operational about the rig. It is more about licensing and the operators CDL etc etc. Go by the actual loaded weight unless of course it exceeds the GVWR then you got a whole lot of other problems and need to get stopped ASAP.Just FYI there are some places where the overweight fines on bridges is 5 figures.
