Old post I know, but I found this interesting. Long story short, I picked up a Magnum S-6 Nitro real cheap one day. The thrift store I bought it from didn't know if it worked or not, but when they're only asking $30 for a $300 + radio PLUS the Telex RK56 chrome mic (NOT a Barjan knock off) that came with it, you tend to not be too concerned on if it works or not, since you already know it's worth more than what you paid, in parts.

Anyways, hooked it up, and it worked of course....the store owner came out and told me I was bleeding all over his store speakers. Whhoops. There was a sticker on top that had the name of a Steel Rods CB shop in northern Indiana. I never heard of them.

Took the radio home, sat it on my bench, opened the bottom cover. 54 MHz trap coils were spread. Now I don't know if this Steel Rod character did this or what....but one things for certain, that ISN'T the way you set up a radio.

I did some research on this Steel Rod guy. Mixed reviews. Someone told me he recently died.

I know Steel Rod was a "big boy", but I hadn't heard anything about him passing. I also know he did a run of the mill peak and tweak hack job on radios (having had him "tune" one of mine).

Randy still cuts the limter in a radio or did. But was still a great tech and passed his knowledge on to others. Randys health got the best of him unfortunately and he had to give up working...
