to be fair about what?
I don't see anything that tells me any different. I knew the guys over at K40 electronics when they came out with the antenna and about the time they had been working on the radio, and I can tell you one thing for sure, that it a branded radio.
BUT it puzzles me on this part -
"Then the technician explained that all CBs have a maximum output of 4 watts, but that changes depending on your surroundings. Buildings, trees, electronic towers and even the chatter from other CB users would cause the output of a CB to fluctuate between 1.5 to 4 watts. The K-40 monitors all the interference and keeps a constant output of 4 watts at all times."
Now first thing is nothing changes inside the radio or for that matter the antenna because of the surroundings. BUT then we have the blue highlighted section which really puzzles me, that doesn't happen.
AND the last part of plain text is just untrue, completely and utterly untrue.
So sorry to burst your bubble there.
All CBs are not created equal

My cobra29 is peaked/tuned by Clay's. I average about 15watts depending on the meter, and can talk a few miles away with other company trucks in Fort Worth even with all the other chatter.
A properly tuned galaxy makes anywhere from 40-100watts correct? -
That depends on what model of Galaxy he is referring to. The single final am only radios like the 949/959 and 979 put out the same power as your cobra 29 maybe a little more with the mosfet final and the dual final Galaxies like the 99v2 put out 40 to 50 watts.ExOTR Thanks this.

If you were to see inside the Cobra 29 and the K-40 back in 1977, you would have never bought the Cobra. It's box was full of wires crisscrossing each other in a maze. While the K-40 looked like something from the future.
It was ahead of its time. -
I did buy a cobra 29 in '77 and had a K40 K401 too in '78. I also had a Stoner and a CPI which made the first two look sick when you looked inside.
bored silly Thanks this. -
What's the importance of a difference in appearance? Do the wires make it less functional or reliable, or is it just the housekeeping neatness factor?
-
I bought a Kraco 23 channel from Kmart in 1977. It was all I could afford. 10-4 Good Buddy.

I'd love to see this K40 that was $300 in the mid 1970's. Sounds like one of those "cool story bro" moments. But I don't mind being proven wrong if you can prove your claims to be true.

Way back when, I had a 23 channel Johnson. One of the best radios I ever had.
-
Johnson made one hell of a radio, the 323 was one of the best engineered receivers out, still beats a bunch of radios even today.
K40 I think retailed for $110 out the door, that was the 401, I think their ssb radio was about $179.bored silly Thanks this.
