"The idler gear failed" "it's a million mile engine, and things break like that in these old engines."

Which, is why I told them to replace anything that they thought or suspected could break, or fail, in that gearbox when they replaced the bull gear back in November.... "It's all good" back in November when I paid my bill! Now that my engine is cratered, "it's a million mile engine, and things break like that"

One week later, and I'm still sitting, waiting on an answer from their corporate office. I'm not anticipating any help from them either.

I found another engine at a shop. It's a remanufactured ddec4 500 HP. It was put in a truck and ran for less than 100k miles before the trucks transmission went out and the whole thing went to auction. I was told I could get it reasonable...

So by that logic they should charge less for parts and labor because they are working on a million mile truck?

I'm forced to have the same shop fix it. Running low on funds, mostly due to the original repairs back in November.

Okay I'm thinking it's my bull bearing but am worried that it could be the cam bearing? When you accelerate you hear metal on metal at the front of the valve cover or at the very front of the motor. Any way to determine which one could be causing the noise without much heartache or money spent wasted trying to find the right gear to replace?!?! Just starting out with FINALLY OWING MY OWN TRUCK AFTER YEARS OF WORKING FOR OTHERS! 1999 Volvo Detroit 12.7 60 series. I'm a farm boy grew up in mechanical work so I've parked the truck till i fix it but can't afford to stay parked for long. Thanks for any and all help!

Can pull cam cover off and accessory drive from passenger side. From hole on accessory drive with a medium bar check for play in the bull gear bearing. And gear teeth obviously. If cam gear has a problem likely caused by the bull gear.

Where is the cover on the passenger side? Any schematics would be great! Thanks

Ok answer me this if you will. I just got this truck so i don't know all the history but i can tell it's just had the head replaced. If the head was removed, and the sproket was taken off the cam and tied up in the cover to keep it from falling in. when it was reinstalled, and the cam put back in without ever removing the cover how could they set the backlash?!?! Cause that is where all the noise is at the cam and the idler. I can tell they never took the cover off when they replaced the head so there's no way to have set the backlash with the way they done it. Praying that's the sound. Seriously considering replacing the bull gear when i go into it cause it has over a million miles. The truck has new transmission and #### good oil pressure so i want to keep it that way. A wheel holder drove it last, it's obvious. Appreciate all the advice i can get.

The accesory drive is the small pully on the passenger side that drives the Alternator and or AC compressor.

    BabyGator Thanks this.

You can check and adjust lash on the adjustable gear with the cover in place. There are 2 access covers that need to be removed. 1 is the cam gear cover, the other is part of the bracket that the fan hub bolts to.

    BabyGator Thanks this.
