I have crunched the numbers, and have determined that for me to be successful (break even to what I am making at my job) I would need to drive an average of 6850 miles per month at $1.50 per mile. This is not including load factoring. If I can do this, I would be able to pay my household, truck, trailer, insurance, permits, fuel, lodging, taxes, and maintenance costs, etc. What I would like to know from others that are currently doing this is...are my numbers realistic? Miles per month at 1.50 per mile. Thank you in advance for any replies/critisism.

I don't think 6850 miles x 1.5 is hard to do at all.

That being said, i believe your calculations are very far off. 6850 x $1.5 is $10,275. Your fuel is probably $1275 at best. Leaves $9000. Maintenance fund is another $1000. Insurance and IFTA is probably another $1000 at least.

Thats $7000 a month, minus truck and trailer payments. Also, minus 25% business taxes on net.

I dont see how this works. Maybe at best you will pay yourself 3k a month??

There are guys grossing 20k a month, and still making peanuts.

    Best of luck

The figures I came up with are the following per month to take home what I'm making now:

    Fixed Costs - truck/trailer/insurance/health insurance/ permits: 2,800
    Household: 3,200
    Variable Costs - Fuel/Tires/Maintenance/Repairs/Lodging/Taxes: 4,248

    Total monthly costs: 10,248

If I can drive 6850 miles a month at an average of 1.50 a mile my monthly income would be 10,275 which would bring me a profit of 26.00 a month over what I am making now at a job.

What do the seasoned drivers think of my numbers? Thanks.

Variable costs are just that. They can change easily. Ie...big repair, tow bill, blown tire..,etc etc

Basically the numbers provided are to run a business at 3k profit a month to pay household bills. No extra money whatsoever. What if something goes wrong. What about savings?

Granted, you'd probably try to run more than 7k miles a month, but do you have freight lined up/ contracted?

I dont know the hotshot game, but i do know that many many many trucks are running with landstar at closer to 1.25 a mile, and some even less.

I'm definitely not trying to poo poo on your plan, just trying to say its not always as easy as 1 2 3

Finding the freight is the key you need. How do you do that is the question? You need to find great paying outbound to start out with. You need to limit going to unproductive areas. You need to think most dollars per least miles. I recall in your other post you inquiring about under 26,000 lbs. I run under 26 however you will be limiting yourself on loads if you go this route. I started out leased to a guy who ran under 26, so I just continued doing it this way. I have older 7.3 powerstroke not a lot of power. On the plus side less wear and tear on vehicle, have a lot of miles 654,452.

I'm assuming your referring to "hotshot" trucking since that is where you posted your question. If that's correct make sure the advice your getting is from hotshot guys not big rig operators. There's a big difference in the freight available between the two.

I run a hotshot and I can tell you from experience you better be making a bare minimum of $1.25-$1.50 for all miles driven. This business is very unpredictable and there will be times where there is no freight available or what is out there is dirt cheap. Have as much cash in reserves as possible. Don't jump in with only a little money saved and expect to make it. Also, don't use the factoring companies if possible. It just a waste.
