Been doing this a day or two.
My 2cents.
An Atlas is for long routes.
A GPS is for final mile.
Common sense ALWAYS overrides both.
If there is weather.. you can reroute.
If you see that the GPS has you going somewhere that doesn't look quite right, even though it may not say NO TRUCKS... for God sakes check it out.
Trust your gut. Many times my GPS will say it's a NO TRUCK area and it's an industrial area. They definitely aren't accurate.
Use your noggin. (And that Atlas)

So i guess the general consensus is the GPS is mostly reliable. Though my GPS has failed to find an exact building before, its never led me to a low bridge or onto a truck restricted route.
The only reason i asked, is because i hear some folks say GPS are horrible. I dont know how a GPS could be less reliable than a map, but maybe im wrong.
And i will obviously always agree that common sense will always win, and if you follow the GPS or anything blindly, you deserve what happens next...jammer910Z and Al. Roper Thank this. -
I use Google Maps first to get the fastest route, match my truck GPS as closely as possible then leave Google Maps running in background for accident/backup alerts. Haven't had any problems or needed an atlas in years. The few times I've been routed through towns with 'No Trucks' signs they've had the alternate truck routes posted.

Me personally. I use the atlas and get a phone number for the delivery or pickup directions. Sometimes even using google maps on the phone or tablet, the precise directions do not match.

Didn't read all posts. I use gps when needed. However, driving off road your not going to get much help. Good ol common sense gets it done.

Keep a Truckers Atlas with you. Look at it first then punch in your destination in the GPS see if they compare. Sometime the truckers atlas has more information than a GPS.. especially for restricted routes..

An atlas provides other useful info other than a road map like kingpin to tandem length limits in different states and weight station locations. I wouldn't get in the truck without it. In fact, if I had to forgo either the GPS or Atlas I'd leave the GPS behind.

As for the other post. You can SAVE your destinations if copilot can't get your there. Then you won't have to worry about cuz now it knows.
