I have a Rand McNally GPS. It does occasionally route badly. Even Google maps will show wrong spot for an address sometimes.
I called a receiver the other day and asked for directions.
He said just put address into GPS. He didn't know the street names.

And conversely, we have several customers that warn us right on the trip order NOT to use the GPS directions, it will route you incorrectly. Just had one the other day in Chebanse, IL. You can see the customer from Interstate 57 as you get off the exit. The town is a grid of streets maybe 4 blocks by 6 blocks. Both of my truck GPS's(I run a Garmin Dezl and a RM 520 at the same time) wanted to put me down a residential street that led directly to the customer instead of the "truck route" marked by the town fathers. The company that provides the data for all GPS manufacturers will likely never know about that truck route because it is not filed in any county, state, or Federal road database.
So, to answer the OP's question. Yes GPS's routinely route me incorrectly.

buy and use old school atlas.

call shipper/receiver for specific directions. sometimes, they have a pre-recorded message when you call.

don't be afraid of technology but don't worship it.

these 3 rules keep me on time every time.

to finally answer your question PCmiler took me off the BG Parkway up and over a really narrow 15% grade winding grade (I learned to drive on winding mountain roads and this one scared hell out of me ) and finally dropped me in beautiful downtown Hazard KY looking at a 5 ton bridge. Fortunately a cop (Cletus ?)came along and led me to my road out. Rule one; trust no technology.

Back in the day. You had your big atlas and then your town specific map. Had boxes full of them and probably 3 or 4 worn out big atlases.

Yes, our Rand McNalley puts us on a truck restricted route every week in Langley, BC. Customer instructions prevail.

I hate trend of companies getting their driveway named "#1 Success Lane" . How often does that show up on GPS?

Yep. Company had gps in truck. Anytime I was going to NC via I40. When I got to Knoxville it always tried sending me west instead of east. Good thing I know how to read a map and signs.
