If I'm not mistaken, the small wire is basically a remote, you probably have a short in it,it leads back to the batterys and should run with the main positive.you can bypass it .when you first got the alternator the bypass wire and instructions should have came with it.if the remote wire is shorted, your new alternator will unfortunately be burnt up.experience is a cruel teacher.

I just went out and looked the alternator over started the truck voltage is right where it needed to be ..he said it was down around 10 earlier today so either I have a short or the regulator is playing games ..ill have to trace and check the main and ground wires I guess thanks

The third small wire is part of the harness so it doesn't come with the alternator..ill have to trace it thanks
