I was told be my boss just to hit the deer. If the deer is stuck to the truck pull it off of the truck. If the truck is drivable drive it back to the shop. If not then call a wrecker. We had one guy hit three deer in one week. The guy is still driving for us.

PROBABLY would have been much better!! My word, how many people have to get hurt, or sadly die because of idiots that do NOT get it. I don't care if it's a moose, bear, deer or your neighbor's little puppy, HIT IT! The hood, radiator and after-cooler of a truck can be replaced. Human life cannot. -
No lane changes! Put both hands on the wheel and HIT IT!

What about a skunk? Would you hit that knowing that the scent might find it's way into the cab, or at least the engine compartment? I know someone that ran over skunk road kill and had a big problem from it. Nasty....

As for a skunk-drive faster to get the smell behind you (just kidding.) When I told my dispatcher about hitting the deer it was nothing more than a trucker war story. In central Illinois deer are everywhere in the fall.
A couple of years ago a church member had just given us a nice car. I was driving it home... and you guessed it- hit a deer. The car was drivable so I went home and called the sheriff you referred me to the State Police. The state police dispatcher chided me for leaving the scene since alchohol could have been involved. Two days later a trooper called over the phone to take the report. I told him what the dispatcher said and his reply was to the effect that a driver stupid enough to stick around deserved to be arrested and they usually don't do a breathalyzer on deer.
The main reason for reporting the accident with a deer is just to document how your vehicle got damaged. Did you know that wildlife belong to the state and therefore when you hit a deer you have damaged state property. If you think the state will fix your vehicle since their property damaged your vehicle- good luck. -
You got the right idea Larry, hang on to the wheel and just hit it.
