I am scheduled for orientation on monday with one of the big companies. The recruiter told me that the road test will be 2 hrs long. I have one year flatbed experience and that`s been local. The new company that i will be working for is a dry van carrier. My guess is that the road test will include bumping the docks . What else does the road test for otr drivers include?
Otr driver road tests?

I'll see if I can remember enough of it to help you. It's been a few years. Turns, use of signals, keeping in your lane, lane changes probably, stops, shifting, backing, pre-trip, city driving, highway driving, possibly hooking up to a trailer, I'm sure there are a couple of other things that I'm missing, but maybe someone else can fill in the blanks.

Two hours? Holy crap! What company are you hiring on to? Perhaps one of their drivers can better explain.
Use of mirrors is a big thing they look for. Keep your head moving, especially if you wear sunglasses. Watch where you stop too, make sure it is before the stop sign/ground marking. My testers purposely took me around a corner where I would hit the curb, just to see if I noticed.Lilbit Thanks this. -
I hear swifty was doing 2 hour road tests.

I don`t want to name the company i will be working. All the reviews that i read on the internet are negative yet when am merging on the interstate i see lots of big rigs rolling bye . I want to keep things positive. All that i can say is that my new company has 100 trucks.I have no problem hooking up the trailer and all the other extracurricular activities. Oh bye the way, I have never used qualcomm. My former company used xata system.

Talk to the drivers at that new company, see what THEY have to say
As for the Qualcomm - I've never seen Xata - but the Qualcomm is just a big honkin' two-way pager, when yuu get right down to it -
When I quit a summer job to return to school, the company asked me to test a few applicants. The job involved delivering tobacco and candy with a step-van. Picture this: I was driving and the applicant was standing on the passenger side with the sliding door open. He sees a pretty woman, leans out the door as we drove past and yells, "Hey ! I love you !!"
He did not get my recommendation. Be careful what you say and do during your road test. You are being judged as to how you represent the company to the public and to the customers. -
Our road test/student trip was eight hours long when I hauled molten aluminum. The applicant was paid for the day, and we delivered a load from Benton Harbor to Kokomo. I recall flunking two drivers. One drifted onto the gravel shoulder near South Bend, kept the hammer down until he found a smooth place, and brought it back onto the pavement. Those loads were top-heavy. I thought he should have allowed the rig to slow before jumping back onto the concrete.
Another applicant had experience with a furniture van, but had never driven anything overweight. I warned him about the "fast" traffic light near Peru, IN. It was downgrade toward the light, and if the green light was "stale", the driver may as well prepare to stop. You guessed it. He ran the red light. Weeks later, I saw him at our fuel stop. He asked me why I flunked him. I said, "Because you ran that light at Peru." He had some excuse. How in good conscience could I have passed someone like that? (On a recent car trip, I noticed the intersection between routes 31 and 24 has been improved. The traffic light is no longer there)Last edited: Oct 25, 2008

The qualcomm is not difficult to use. They will at the least, give you a 'cheat sheet' of the different macros for things such as your mt call, arrived at shipper, etc. Lurch put it about right two way paging with a keyboard.
Remember that many of the negative reviews are by drivers that didn't cut it with the company, and probably won't cut it with very many companies. You will always hear more negative than you will positive about anything. -
lol...... companys i'm with now I didn't even have a drivin test, couple others were 15 mins circle jerk , 5 minutes of drivin, and another just hired you and put u in trainin' for a week and decided after that....... trainer for me watched me for 5 minutes andhe ended up askin me a question and then said apparently you'll do fine and slept the rest of the week in the sleeper
