There's actually a question about 1 hand or 2 hands for driving?? Seriously not the company a driver needs to be at if they have to question their level of driving comfort. Wow..... I often drive one handed with my right hand laying over my shifter relaxin.
-
Resting a hand on the shifter is a habit I have too...
It eventually wears out the bushing in the shifter and it will rattle...
I try not to do it anymore.....I put an Elite seat in with the long arm rests and solved that habit.
Now my right elbow stays on the arm rest and my right hand resting on the steering wheel for the most part..Grubby, DDlighttruck, MACK E-6 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Ya,unfortunately with the "Kid" bosses that are for lack of a better analogy "As dumb as 2 bricks". Couldn't shake Nintendo when they hit the 10th grade, picked on in 9th grade. Now they're "in Charge" What's that the driver in 726510 is "eating a Corn Dog " with one one hand on the wheel" OMG ,that's a Safety Violation. But,seriously if you're ever Fortunate enough to have a Steer Tire "Pop"....You'll be glad you had the "2 Handed Vulcan Death Grip" on the wheel! Let's juse say "it'll Get your Attention Real Quick". Just MO

It's alligator season. Scraps of tire all over the roads.
In the last week I have counted SIX trucks on the shoulder with steer tire flats or blowouts. The most dramatic was partially jacknifed with a passenger side steer gone, rim was just a nub on the hub, fender was scattered over the last 100 yards. Yep, that hand resting on the stick with your left hand on top the crossbar would have been effective...
...but maybe that's exactly what that driver was doing.BUMBACLADWAR Thanks this. -
I wonder how many drivers who've ended up in a ditch for whatever reason have had a two-handed death grip on the wheel? Yeah, you don't know that either.Grubby, Joetro, OLDSKOOLERnWV and 2 others Thank this.

I blew a new Michelin steer at 75 mph+....My right hand was quick to grab the wheel.
Kept it upright and got stopped at the edge of the grass.....NOT fun!
I never drive with a death grip on the wheel.....You would be surprised how fast instinct kicks in with a situation like that.
I think a driver who is confident and a little relaxed is better than one who is nervous all the time and gripping the wheel.
It all comes with experience. Just my opinion, everyone has their own way of doing things. -
I knew a one arm driver who could shift and drive better than most people, he lost his arm in Korea , came home and become a truck driver when most said he couldn't do it he proved them wrong, so I am wondering what the company would say about only having one hand
Grubby, Joetro, Lepton1 and 1 other person Thank this. -
' You would be surprised how fast instinct kicks in with a situation like that ".
Been there done that ! Instinct does kick in ,as it was happening you simply manage the situation without a thought..
Once outside the vehicle I began shakin' like a leaf and wanted to puke when the adrenaline was wearing down....DANG !!!!!!!!!!!!Grubby, BUMBACLADWAR, Lepton1 and 2 others Thank this. -
Check with the company, most of them have the cam only come on if you brake really hard or make a sudden swerve. Some have a red light when it is on. As far as having both hands on the wheel, if you blow a steer tire you will wish you had both hands holding on! I had a captains seat and with your elbows on the arms your hands were on the wheel. Check about the cams more from your company. If they are on all the time, well give them something to look at! Maybe get OCD for picking your nose, like they want to see that! Enjoy trucking!
