That's not true any more. With current "connected systems" available to mid/large fleets, ANY segment can be viewed, at will, up to 4-7 days ago, depending on video quality preferred and subscription signed up to. This applies to both forward only and dual-facing camera systems. All they need is a date and approximate time, and this time-frame can be viewed, as long as it's within the maximum storage days limit threshold. This is to handle "motorist call-ins", 1, 2, or 3+ days later.

With this in mind, it stands to reason any random segment can be viewed as a matter of internal random audit of driver's habits.

The braking and swerving incidents simply "flag" [and upload] those segments for later review if desired. All other "non-event" time is stored on the truck system to be later retrieved if desired. New compression algorithms allow 100+ hours of HD quality video to be stored on a fairly cheap and small amount of storage. Also, when the vehicle is stopped, recording may stop, but unusual movement will start it back up. Even high-wind movement will "flag" an incident. (Which is to detect parking lot incidents while driver is away)

STexan is dead on about the cameras.....They record all of the time even if the light is not on...
They also have 2 microphones built in......
Seen this with my own eyes at the safety managers computer on day while he laughed at the driver..
I worked there a VERY short time after the cameras were installed.

Do you know how much storage space it would take to save 4-7 days of video?
I doubt any camera could do it. It would take at least a TB of storage, which is hugely expensive in solid state and too large with hard drives.

Compression can only go so far. You lose data and image quality at every stage.

Why would they need two microphones? They need not be directional, after all. One would do to record all audio.

With 54 years of OTR under my belt, can anyone name me a trucker who sits behind the wheel for four to six hours straight holding the wheel with two hands like a propped up stick man. If any of you highway cowboys out there say that you do, my response would be Bu** SH**.
